How do you give out treasure in your campaign?

My world has a no-money economy based upon ritual gift exchange (and some barter) which I model using a modified Wealth mechanic as per 'D20 Modern' whereby the PCs gain Influence through their deeds.

When treasure is given it is either done
1. in resources (eg the PCs discover a rock pile containing usable Obsidian, or the carapace of a giant insect (usable as armour or a shield))
or
2. as gifts/boons from Patrons, or in social encounters with NPCs (eg when the PCs saved a White heron from the clutches of a giant eel the heron (daughter of the goddess of the east wind) pulled a feather from her wing (a feather token), another encounter had a sprite offer the PCs a drink of water (actually a healing elixir)
