How do you hide an object?

In the last game session, a guard searched my wife's character's gear. He rolled a 4 on his Search check, so didn't find squat. However, this started the discussion of how she could hide her masterwork thieves tools. I couldn't find anything in the rules. My first impulse is to have it be a Hide check that is countered by the searcher's Search check instead of Spot. Any thoughts? Anything official?

Well, this may not be entirely appropriate given the forum but I run both D&D as well as Star Wars d20 games. For SW there is the Sleight of Hand skill (instead of pick pocket) and this is the skill rolled for hiding objects upon one's person. Since these skills are equivalent I would think it'd be reasonable to make a pick pocket check to hide possessions.

The Hide skill is used for hiding yourself. For concealing a small object on your person, I'd be more inclined to use a Pick Pocket check, since that includes 'stage magic' effects like making a coin disappear.

Rokugan goes into a bit of detail with this. It is a disguise check vs. opponents spot/search check depending on what they are doing. If searching, I would imagine they would get a hefty circumstances bonus.
