How Do You Like the Warlord?

What Do You Think of the Warlord?

  • I pretty much like it.

    Votes: 306 76.5%
  • I pretty much don't like it.

    Votes: 94 23.5%

I like what I've seen, but that isn't much. I personally adore the idea of tactical movement beig kinda center to this class (brings me in mind of my favorite D&D 3 spells: Benign Transposition and Slide.

Of course whether or not its something I, as a player, might enjoy is unsure, but I sure as hell want to be one as the DM :)

Looks like the silent majority has voted 'for' 4th edition again.
It looks like there is a shift in the trend, however. Four months ago, votes in favor of the new 4E elements seemed to lead by about a 20% margin (60/40). Now it looks like that margin has increased to around 60% (80/20).

But this is hardly a scientific poll. ;)

It should read: shift a willing ally.

But maybe allies can always decide to be unwilling.

In my game, I'll tell the players that the power allows others to move freely if they choose. Instead of the Warlord saying:

"I'm gonna move the Fighter here"

He'll say:

"Bob, free shift if you want"

It's Bob who is moving, and Bob who chooses when and where he moves. Ultimately the power of the Warlord is supposed to help Bob, not allow Warlord to boss people or move people against their will.

You also need to remember the 3rd or 4th rule of the Interweb - People who are dissatisfied will make themselves heard more than those not. In other words, people who don't like the warlord, are much more likely to vote in order to make sure that the rest of the community hears them.

My guess is that the real numbers will run around 95-5 or 90-10 at the most.

Cheers

Did you see the poll in the general forum a couple of weeks ago? It was much more negative. While the numbers in this forum may be something like that, I don't think that's a very helpful matrix when even in the EN World general forum (and EN world is known to be more "pro 4e") was still at well over 50% dislike.

I like the Polls, I enjoy the Polls, but I try to keep myself aware that they don't mean that much.

I think what we really need to grok the warlord is an example from a movie or television show.

What fictional characters do you think best matches the warlord?

Kamina, from Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann.

I've wanted to play a warlord for a while now for this very reason.

Although the pitfiends allies should not be able to resist the command... actually it should read taget devil up to lvl25 (which will serve them respect from lesser devils)

the rest is quite fine. He has good damage potential and makes combat more realistic by allowing allies to really react to certain actions without making it a general rule (which would make the combat system to comlicated)
Agreed on the "willing" part.

I'm not too keen on the name (White Raven Onlaught) and the description of the ability is too generic.

Here's my alternate:

Spot the Openings Warlord Attack 1
Your well-placed attack allows you to spot an opening in the enemy ranks, and you point it to an ally. Like a domino effect, your allies start seeing those openings themselves and advance like a crashing wave of steel.
Daily
Martial, Weapon
Standard Action
Melee weapon
Target: One creature
Attack: Strength vs. AC
Hit: 3[W] + Strength modifier damage, and you slide an adjacent willing ally 1 square. Until the end of the encounter, whenever you or an ally within 10 squares of you makes a successful attack, the attacker slides an adjacent willing ally 1 square.
Miss: Choose one willing ally within 10 squares. Until the end of the encounter, the ally slides an adjacent willing ally 1 square after making a successful attack.

One of my biggest gripes of 3.x was the focus on the "battle board" - things like Attacks of Opportunity, the rogue's Sneak Attack, diagonal movement gripes, and the like. Previous to 3.x, our gaming group seldom used any kind of battle board for tactics and such; only when the PC's were outnumbered 2:1 or more did we ever see a need, otherwise combat would be as simple as "each of you gets two monsters, the player in full plate gets three".

With the advent of 4.0, it seems like the ENTIRE focus of combat is going to be placed on the battle board and how PC's can manipulate it. This is clearly not going to be an edition for my storytelling tastes.

You should not underestimate the power of fanboyism either.
I have seen many pro-4e on these boards get more intense than the haterz.

Also this is an anonymous poll, so couldn't a single rabid voter just log out and swing the poll either way?

I like to believe we're all more ethical than that... doesn't necessarily make it true, but it's what I like to believe.

About the warlord, well, I'm not sure. Some interesting ideas but when I introduced Bo9S into my last campaign the crusader didn't work out very well, so I'm concerned (since the crusader seemed to be the warlord playtest).
