I don't really care one way or the other how I get XP. The only thing I want is, if I'm a caster who uses XP for item creation or spells, I would like to know the total. Otherwise, I really couldn't care less.

I generally prefer it by the book because most of the time, in a party that has characters of various levels, the GM's I've played under have made no effort to seperate the XP and give higher level characters less and lower level characters more.

Makes having a spellcaster with any type of item creation feat a waste of experience points.

I dont care. I like having XP as spending it on certain spells and item creation is important part of game balance.
I don't really care if it is made up on a whim, calculated by dividing the xp needed to level by the number of sessions the party/DM wants to spend at each level, or painstakingly calculated by adding up all the creatures defeated, ad hoc roleplay adjustments and +% for difficult tactical situations.

In a players survey for my group I had 3 vote for gaining a levels no faster than 1 per 3 (8hr) sessions, one that voted for the book rate, and one that wanted 1 level per 2 sessions.

I plan on asking again shortly...

I don't really care about methodology, as long as there is a reasonable, steady rate of advancement. One thing I introduced a long time ago, which the DM for my current group uses, is XP awards for things like writing a character background and writeups after each session. Of course, I'd probably do that anyway, because it is part of the fun for me in playing a character, but it is a nice thing to do and it also encourages others to do the same. I always enjoy reading other's writeups. I started it with Shadowrun (giving extra karma for it) as GM and I still have a notebook full of multiple writeups from each session for many different campaigns. They all make for a fun read even now, ten to fifteen years later.

All the DMs in our group do ad hoc xp. We typically just tell the players when they go up levels. We all tend to keep an eye on it, since we all know the rules. But there is also the fact that the level of the characters has a lot to do with how the encounters play out, and that is very important to the DM, so we let the DM pace advancement however he sees fit. Its just part of the formula of designing a campaign.

I like to get XP 'by the book' - but since that varies depending upon the book you're reading (CoC d20, for example, advocates awarding experience per number of adventures completed), I cast my vote for 'something else'.

I like to do XP as a group. Every session there are 6 people in the group and a maximum of 1,000 xp a piece. Depending on how the session goes the xp is determined. I never know what my pcs are going to do so I don't have specific tasks that must be achieved, so I rate on how well the pcs attempt to do the things they wish to do. Extra XP is provided if theres some innovation IE defeating or bypassing a difficult encounter without combat.
