I got rid of gnomes - they're just halflings slightly modified. I gave Hobbyts a slight illusionary ability, made them range in character from very "home and garden loving" folk to slightly wanderlust and adventure-prone. So they fill both roles. Nobody ever played gnomes anyway.

After fleshing out dwarves, halfings, and elves, I have difficulty in finding a niche for gnomes. The easiest solution has generally to be to not include gnomes in the campaign setting. Gnomes just don't get the same level of love.

Dragonlance tinkerers rule.

The Mystara version (somewhat competent, slightly goofy tinkers) is missing from the poll.

Once again I have a mix depending on my campaign world.

Main world- Eberron- like with a little OD&D. Dwarves are my tinkerers

In yet another world they are as Tonguez mentioned, tiny, forest-dwelling fae similar to their depiction in the famous story/art book GNOMES. There culture is Finnish/Norweigian mixed and they can communicate with most forest animals.

I used to hate gnomes and loved Birthright for getting rid of them... but then I tried one. it was a game set in the FR and I was going to play a rogue... but I didn't want to do the stereotypical halfling rogue, so I decided to go gnome. It was one of the most enjoyable experiences as a player!!! Later in the campaign (after we switched games for a while) I played a gnome druid and talked two other players to play a gnome rogue and gnome illusionist. It was a BLAST. We had lots of good pranks going but never crossed the line of detracting from the game. It was awesome and I was really happy to play it.

I also like that gnomes have lots of room for development being one of the only races that isn't based on "Tolken" type stories.
