I've always had a fondness for the flavor of the Gnomes of Wil Huygen & Rien Poortvliet although their size was a distinct problem for a D&D setting (although probably not for an old Lankhmar setting although I never used them in my Lankhmar campaigns) so I tended to combine the flavor of the works with the rules of the 1st edition AD&D gnome.

So, kinda like mole rats?

Yes mole ratshad a big influence on my conception of Gnome society (eg the eusocial burrowers thing):)

The single female per clan was also a reference to Smurfette (which a lot of people seem to miss - I must be showing my age:()

Gnomes had always been a enigma to me.
Didn't quite like the tinker idea of gnomes...still can't get the image of dwarves doing that out of my head.

But in my homebrew, i modelled them after the moogles from Final Fantasy and with a little background that the gnomes, as peaceful and pacifist creatures had their homeland sacked, suffered a holocaust against their race, still maintained a small amount of survivors that now just prefer to wander around the world in search of knowledge, exploration, and to feed their obession of chronicling, recording and observing anything that can be written into books than rebuilding their old kingdom.

Call them little Charles Darwins if you will. Lots of them.
