How Do You Like Your Steak?

How "Done" Do You Like Your Steak?

Medium is my preference: I also feel ordering "Medium" is a way of signaling to the chef "I trust you, make me a good steak, please :)"

My parents prefer it Bleu, so I thought I just hated steak until one day my dad accidentally "burned the steak" and I had it well done for the first time in my life, and hence enjoyed steak for the first time. But I have learned Medium is a happy...medium...between those extremes.

How U.S. Presidents Liked Their Steak
(according to the Internet)

Bleu - I couldn't find a single U.S. President who preferred their steaks cooked (or rather, not cooked?) this way.

Rare - the preferred steak of President Ronald Reagan

Pittsburg Rare - Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower and George H.W. Bush enjoyed their steaks this way.

Medium Rare - the favorite of President Jimmy Carter.

Medium Well - the favorite of President Barack Obama.

Well Done - the favorite of Presidents Harry S. Truman, Ulysses S. Grant, and Donald J. Trump.

Didn't eat steak - President Thomas Jefferson didn't care for steak, and famously remarked that all meats were "condiments" for his vegetables. President Bill Clinton enjoyed rare steaks, but switched to a vegan diet after having quadruple bypass surgery.

I’m fairly agnostic about sauces. Butter, chimichurri, bordelaise, bearnaise, peppercorn, mushroom. The only thing is it can’t come from a bottle. Why would I make or order a nice steak, and then ruin it with the stuff I get in aisle 6 at the grocery store?

I worked as a waiter in a steak restaurant for a while, and the worst patrons by far were the ones who would insist on their steaks being "medium rare," then send them back over and over again to be cooked a little longer because they were "still too raw." I honestly believe they wanted their steaks well done, but couldn't bear to admit it.
