D&D 3.x How do you plan to end your 3E campaign?

How do you plan to end your 3E campaign?

I'm pretty sure that my group won't be among the early adapters of 4e. I'm pretty sure we will eventually make the move, but we're going to stick to 3.5 for awhile yet. Xmas 2008 is right around the corner you know!

At that point we'll probably draw it down to a natural conclussion. Massive battle against incredible odds. Snatching victory from the jaws of defeat.

you know... the usual.

I'm running a group through City of the Spider Queen right now; they're about to reach Maerimydra. This slow moving group will probably still need 8-9 months, if they don't bite the dust.

The timing is thus near perfect; when this campaign ends, I'll have had time to decide whether we switch or keep playing 3.5e.

If the party meets its end before the last battle of the campaign, I'll probably offer a short diversion like Paranoia or Call of Cthulhu. Any big decisions are postponed 'till June next year.

I just realized that I never actually answered the question. I plan to have a massive, dangerous battle, one or two role-playing follow-up sessions wherein things get resolved (or don't, if the PCs failed), and then a final Q&A session where the players can ask me anything they want about the campaign.

And it's all gonna get posted to the storyhour, right? Right? :D

On topic, the only 3E campaign I'm currently running is the first Pathfinder AP, so it's going to conclude on its own. I'm going to be starting a campaign in a couple weeks for my FLGS that will transition into 4th. Doing that campaign is netting me a free 4E DMG (woot). I also have a pure 4E campaign I plan to start ASAP after the release, which I'm running a 3E prequel to here on the boards. That game will probably stay 3E just to keep things simple.

I'm not the DM, but I'd imagine celebrate hitting level 20 for the first time, and then figure out what to do between then and June. I'll want to run Episode 2 of my KotOR SWSE game at some point, and one of us might run Keep on the Shadowfell at some point, but odds are we'll have a low to mid-level new 3.5 game going on when 4e hits.

I would have liked an option for "convert characters to 4E and keep going". Or, better yet, "convince players to convert to C&C and keep going", but that's probably a very small minority vote.

My campaign is hitting it's 16th year this summer. It spanned 2e to 3e to 3.5e, but we aren't making the jump to 4e; the heroes are too powerful at this point. So we're naturally drawing to a close, and I'll be starting a new campaign later next year.

The trick, I think, is whacking myself in the head with a hammer every time I think "Just ONE more sub-plot!" I'm great at starting new plots, but, umm, I have a little trouble closing them down for good. Maybe. Twitch.

I have some fun plans for the 4e campaign, though.

Sixteen years! Amazing! My campaign has been running about the same amount of time, although not concurrently, spanning the same editions as yours. I have the same "problem" as well...plots and subplots galore.

I don't plan on drawing things to a close, though. I can't imagine what that would be like. There is so much richness and history in the campaign that I couldn't just throw that away. I might start something new, but I could never put a definite cap on the old.

My FR Sembia campaign will come to a natural conclusion before the publication of 4e. This isn't a change, but was going to occur anyway.

My Eberron campaign is more problematic. My group has serious edition fatigue and wants to convert asap, but the Eberron book won't be published for a while. I am hoping to find a natural stopping point, but if that doesn't happen, I may put it on hold anyway.

My first 4e campaign will be a homebrew reboot/reimagining of an old campaign of mine.

To answer the question asked: the FR campaign will end with an epic event (the possible Return of Auppensor), while the Eberron campaign will likely just end. The FR campaign is a homebrew adventure path (levels 1-16), but the Eberron campaign is more episodic (inspired by pulp fiction).
