Mostly in person with friends. Also did in person with AL play, but I've cut back and even quit the campaign I'm in. Largely because with things like AL, you don't know the people all that well or what their styles are, and I find the sessions way more chaotic as everyone wants to do their own thing, and there's always a few who constantly talk about how another edition was way better, or they have really bad social skills (not just the hygiene, but I find a lot of pick up players enjoy playing evil PCs for some reason).

With my group of friends, we all understand each other and have a great time playing.

Getting together in person, sharing drinks and food, and gaming, is a real joy of friendship. That's pretty much how I game most of the time.

That being said, con play with strangers is also an important experience of gaming. There's something about being able to connect with and have a good time with people you've never met before that makes the hobby so great.

Okay, I know it's a little early in the poll, but I'm a little bit surprised that all the votes have gone for one category.

The RPG Paranoia's catch-phrase ("The Computer is Your Friend") comes to mind; all of us responding so far are doing so on electronic devices. Hmmm ...

You specified D&D, so I had to choose online. I play in two groups (both groups of friends), one face to face and the other mostly online, although we get together a few times a year to play in person. However, the face to face group doesn't play D&D exclusively, while the online group does. So while my gaming is split between in-person and online, my D&D is majority online.
