I most often play in person with my childhood friends i'm blessed to be able to still play with for more than 20 years!

I often play online with strangers and not-so-strangers-anymore-i-came-to-consider-friends but haven't got the chance for some times now.

I did run many pick-up games back when WoTC had a VT in BETA Testing and often recruited here and there for those who will remember. It was fun to get to meet and play with other fellow forumnites seen regularly loll #RiP VITA :)

Almost exclusively in person, with friends (and my daughter).

During college, I had some groups that were "friends I game with" and "gamers I hang with". I liked both, but the former endured after graduation -- mostly by inertia, since I kept in contact with several of the same friends. Periodically, we've added new friends to the table, but it's always friend first, anymore.

After college, I did some online (PBEM and message board) games. Those were great when I had the time. They're different than live games, though, and I prefer live.

One of my players runs an AL group and I keep thinking I should try that out.

96% of people here primarily play with their friends? Hmm.

I voted 'In Person - Other' because I primarily play through my Meetup or with groups that started in the Meetup & moved on. Or online with people I didn't know. Previously I recruited online for home game. Now, of course some of those people become my friends, but I'm assuming 'with friends' means "with people I was friends with BEFORE we started playing D&D together." Is that what it means to all 96% of you? If so I'm quite surprised. :)

Um, sort of. I voted "in person, with friends", but I hadn't consciously thought (until you posted) about the fact that these guys were rather casual acquaintances until I offered to DM for them, and then it turned into a campaign.

Even after what you point out, I would still call it "in person, with friends" because it really is a social thing, in the sense that it is the participants who matter to me, and not "playing D&D" as a thing. If the guys moved on to other things I would not try to recruit other players, I would just do other things like read massive fantasy novels or write web apps. Life is busy.

We all wish that no? I miss college days where D&D play was longer and more frequent.... :)

I plan to go back to such schedule im my retiring home one day :P
Yes! I remember how my grandmother used to play cards with the other ladies in her retirement community. I always pictured myself doing that with D&D. Hey, Plaguescarred, when we get older you and I should start a retirement D&D community - but you may have to move down south. I don't know if I will be able to weather Canadian winters. Lol.

Mostly A, some C. That rotating group was to be AL til the DM wanted to do things his way, but still kept the informal groupings and episodic nature of things. But even that fell apart, with the remnants forming our weekly home game.

Heaven to ocean, ocean to earth, earth back to heaven...show me the path engraved by the light.

It's changing. Mostly I've played (A) in person with friends, but recently with friends having children and it hard to synch up schedules, I've been playing both (D) on-line with friends via Roll20, and (F) via play-by-post here on ENWorld.

So...I had no idea what to answer on the poll, which only lets you select one option, but there's my answer.
