How do you present the game in public?

Heh, I had an encounter with a policeman in D'Angelo's when I was berating one of the other players for not wearing gloves while loading his gun. Fortunately the officer knew about RPGs.

Other encounters with officers of the law include one outside of Waldenbooks while I was reading Clanbook: Tzimice. He aske 'did you get that inside', I answered 'yes', and he pulled out his wallet and asked me to run in and buy him a copy. Another was a policeman who stopped me while I was carrying a pistol casse filled with miniatures, wanting to make sure that it didn't contain guns. (A reasonable stance, perhaps...). The next time I encountered him he asked me to open it again, he wanted to show his partner, who played D&D...)

I have never had any trouble explaining RPGs to people, except for one person who seemed to think that I actually believed in dragons and suchlike. (She was a new age pagan.)

The Auld Grump

*EDIT* Generally I descibe rolr playing as 'Advanced Let's Pretend', or with some groups as similar to la comedia de artes, where the characters are fixed, but the script is not.

I've never really had any problem with role playing or talking about it in public other than getting some weird stares from people with what could best be described as mild geekophobia.
But that doesn't mean I'd talk particularly loudly about planning an in-game assassination at Denny's. We may have freedom of speech, but you really do have to watch what you say. People overhear the darndest things and can jump to some very unfortunate conclusions, especially if they're armed.
