How do you refer to your character? First or third person?

Do you generally refer to your character in first or third person?

  • First person: I say "I cast fireball, I attack the monster"

    Votes: 67 41.1%
  • Third person: I say "Flara casts fireball, she attacks the monster"

    Votes: 11 6.7%
  • A mix of first and third person.

    Votes: 85 52.1%

As a pc i talk 85 first person 15 commentator how hes feeling...

"oh man that longsword through the shoulder must have hurt...."

as for just roleplaying i hate when people i play with use 3rd person...."kiri wants to attack the monster....." or uses "i want to attack the monster" which just makes me see red.

It's a mix for me: 85% first person, 15% third person. I use first person to speak to other characters and interact with surroundings, and third person to describe things in game terms.

Edit: As DM, I use third person quite a lot, since there are often multiple NPCs to distinguish between. I'd guess somewhere between 40%-55% third character as DM.

Occasionally, I like using third person for dialogue, doing so makes you sound insane and primitive as long as you growl alot while you speak.

"Keuroth don't like dwarves."

"Keuroth doesn't drink pansy wine."

"Keuroth wants to see orc heads on pikes."

it's funny, I use a mixture of first and third, sometimes switching from one to the other in the very same sentence, but it always seems to make sense. or, if not, my GM and fellow players are used to it :p

1st person. The only time I use 3rd person is when I'm running two PCs at once, like perhaps if I have to run someone's character while she's absent. Then I'll continue with 1st person for my PC and use 3rd person for the second PC.

and when describing the action i use body language as well as first person...

waves hands menacingly in the air before striking the table with my cup

I do a lot of body language, especially when I'm tired and, for one reason or another, the words just won't come. It greatly amuses the other players. "Uh-oh, Brad's miming again."

More interestingly, do you use mostly Author Stance, or some Actor Stance or even Director stance?

Don't confuse Third person with Author stance and Author stance with Metagaming...
