how do you store your D&D minis?

Well I don't drag my miniatures around so my solution isn't exactly portable. I'm not exactly sure what they are called, but I use those plastic drawers you see in garages. Each case is like seven columns and fifteen rows of those little plastic drawers you'd commonly keep screws and such in. They make some bigger ones for huge miniatures as well.

Ah, keeping in diaglo's OD&D spirit, he only uses the Original Cart. All other carts are pale imitations.

that's a caisson. over hill, over dale, we will hit the dusty trail...

after lugging around 40 lbs of minis at Gen Con Indy two years ago b/c PKitty convinced me to run an OD&D session (which btw never happened...but that is a rant for another thread). i had to find a better way to transport my stuff.

I use these Tool Organizers from Stanley to keep D&D plastic mini's sorted out. Easy to carry, efficient use of space.

Ok, Image upload not working right, I'll just link to it.

Tackle Box.

The Spider Deluxe tackle box. Wal-Mart $14-15

It has a top clear compartment with room for several huge minis (dice bag, etc.). Inside are five pull out clear tray/compartments with change-able dividers. With all the dividers in, you can fit 2-3 minis in each section (about 40 sections in each tray).

(I'll post a pic, if I can find this thread when I get home tonight.)

I have waaay to many and I will only get more. I organize them into these groups (placed in huge ziplocks bags, clearly marked then placed in a huge tub). The cards are stored in plastic sleeves like baseball cards).

My categories are designed around the monster types/subtypes of the Monste Manual:
Aberrations
Animals
Constructs
Dragons - Metallic, Chromatic, Other
Magical Beasts
Outsiders - Outer Planes, Inner Planes
Ooze (only 1 guy in this group unfortunately)
Plants
Vermin
Undead - Greater, Lesser

Then I have a few separate sections for these guys:
Iconic - Regular guys and the Psionic Iconic
Celestials
Fiends - Devils; Fiends - Demons; Fiends - Other
Eberron specific
Greyhawk specific
Forgotten Realms specific - Good, Evil, Iconic

All generiic humanoids and monstrous humanoids get their own ziplok bag organized by race (all gnolls in one bag, all gnomes in another). With large numbers of a race, such as humans, I break them down into Good, Evil and Neutral groups.

Like some of the other ways....

I've been buying a good amount of minis lately but I'm looking for a good way to store and transport them other than a cardboard box. Something with compartments to sort them would be nice as well. Any ideas?
Briefcase or laptop case or even just a dufflebag. The dufflebag would need extra support on the sides. Basic idea is simply to have layers of foam.

I have used the blue packing foam- easy to cut out spaces for mini's since not all are the same size nor dimensions. This also allows for differing thicknesses. A permanent marker is easy to write on a corner what is in the foam.

I use a simple clear box from staples. I simply write on the side of the foam and can thus easily see to what level of foam I must go to find the correct mini.

It is a cheap and easy way to do it, then if the mini's you carry around changes it is not a big deal to re-do the foam compartments. Or simply take one layer out and input a new one.

I also use the ziplocs to organize my mini's, but I carry all of them inside a large pistol case. Take the foam out and then toss the zip locks in. I can carry all of my minis in there (couple hundred) and it is easy to transport with the large grip.

Well, now I know wtf a caisson is. :D From context, I had figured it was some sort of wheeled military device.

I do like the one you showed. The big box on one end would have room for plenty of minis, and you could lay out several Battlemats on the flat area, for a really epic combat...

Spider Tackle Box, as promised
