how does "calling a mount" work for a Paladin?

Well, first you must catch it in a special device called a pokeball. These wonderful devices can be thrown at the creature you wish to be your mount (make a ranged touch attack). If you hit it, the mount then magically shrinks and is stored inside the Pokeball. As part of the pokeball's wonderous magic, you don't have to worry about feedind it, gviing it air, or even letting it out for exercise.

Then, when you need it, pull out the pokeball and toss it onto the ground while pronouncing your mount's name followed by the words "I choose you." The mount will then serve you faithfully for a few hours after which it will be magically pulled back inside the pokeball, ready to be called again tomorrow.

:D

Really? I thought this was the mechanic for the Summon Monster I to IX and Summon Nature's Ally I to IX spells. Looks like I've been playing my cleric wrong all this time :(.

Thats a pretty good feature, to dismiss the mount at will... well, as a free action i mean... Especially if you have a sadistic DM that gets you in bad perdictament.

BBEG, as he holds a sword to the throat of the Paladin's mount: Take one more step, and your faithful stead dies.

The BBEG readies to see if you surrender

Paladin: unsummon the mount...

heh....

Very useful ability. Last session, a paladin PC made his appearance and had his mount swallowed by a tendriculos. I cheerfully explained how through the empathic link he could feel the poor wounded horse as it became paralyzed and then began to be digested by the creature's stomach acid. The paladin promptly dismissed his mount, saving it.

*rereads RigaMortus' post*

Hey! What's with the "sadistic" crack? I'm just a guy who...er, wants his players to be able to use their PCs' special abilities. Yeah, that's it :p

So Gandalf is a paladin?

That'd fit for me... He casts very few, not particularly flashy spells throughout the books. However, the guy can most certainly brawl and seems extremely hard to kill. Smells like paladin to me.

On the other hand, he seemed to have more than 3 braincells... and he never arbitarily killed someone because they 'smelt of evil'... so he's not like any of the paladins I've ever gamed with. :)

Back on track: I like the idea of the mount being where it's needed at just the right moment... rather than the appearing suddenly in a flash of light.

In both the campaigns I play in Paladins mounts have been house-ruled back to the 3.0 version. Which suits me because I think the 3.5 version is silly, and also because it allows me to get a dire lion mount for my paladin in one of them.

I wouldn't mind a middle ground version though, where it works like the 3.0 version, but there is a spell that allowed you to summon your mount to you, with the option to send it back at the end (or during) or not.

Just my €0.02.

glass.

The designers left it intentionally vague, but it works as if you are gating in the mount, from what I can tell - it's physically present, and is a boon companion. The means of appearance is up to the DM, really.

Exact same mount, which appears with its equipment and stays for 2 hours per paladin level. This could get inconvenient below 12th level if you find yourself unexpectedly needing a horse...
How often do you spend 24 hours straight riding around on a horse?

Well, not being a mongol, never. However, how often have you used your horse in an emergency. I recall one game when the party was awoke in the middle of the night on the leading edge of a plains fire. I can only imagine a Paladin swearing about how his horse was already used up, since you can only call it once per day.
