Re

I tried online gaming. Tried joining one campaign, that didn't last due to differences with the DM when he decided that one of the other PC's could play an Acolyte of the Skin while I was playing a Paladin/Cleric of Lathander. The DM didn't even ask me if I was willing to play in a party with serious conflict. I might've said yes, but I don't like being thrown into a conflict without knowing one is going to exist in the first place. I didn't have to know the exact nature of the conflict, just that one was going to be present.

The second game I tried to run. It wasn't bad save that I made the mistake of allowing players from at least three different time zones play. They were all good people, we just had a hard time progressing because while one player was responding to e-mails, the others were sleeping.

When I was younger, I joined groups formed by people I met at the local gaming store. I very rarely found a truly enjoyable campaign though due to vast differences in personalities. It took me along time to develop a cool core gaming group. Now I game with guys I have met over the years through gaming who still like to play.

Online and the local gaming store are two great places to look for groups.

i'll add another testimonial of finding my gaming group through these boards.

one past group got formed up when someone accidentally let slip a D&D reference at a party. all the people who "got" the reference came together and soon we had a new gaming group.

when i was in the Army and just transferred to a new base, i overheard some guys at the chow hall -- all i could hear was things like "...AC..." "...hit points..." "...longsword..." so i go over and introduce myself... :)

online and gaming stores seem to be the two best ways of finding a group if you don't currently have one.

I got involved in my current group via various boards... mostly here and Mortality.net.

However, I also recommend accessdenied.net, fathomsgate.com, and other rpg databases. I still get a couple of e-mails here and there from people searching for games.

Another great resource is Yahoo Groups. Search for your town/city/county and the word "dungeons" or "dragons" or "rpg" or "roleplaying" or "gaming"... etc. I found a couple of groups that way.

Anyway... good luck.

Though I mainly lurk here, I can honestly say that this board got me into the best gaming group I have ever been in.

After getting hooked on 3E, I was faced with a problem. I was in a new state and had lost all my gaming connections.

So...I posted here and stated my intentions. I only got a few replys online, but I got about 6 or 8 who just emailed me directly. Eventually about a dozen or more of us met up at a local burger joint and we divided everyone up into groups that were looking for certain games, or could only play at certain times. I think at least 2 groups were formed that day, but it has probably spawned 5 or 6 groups from people shifting groups over time.

Eventually I landed with my current players which is the kind of group that I was hoping for in the first place.

There are 5 people, we are all close to 30 or just over, mature, experienced players that get together every other week or so to stir up trouble in a great homebrew.

So give these boards a chance, you might be surprised.

I am a GM in a land void of GMs. All I need to do is crack the spine of a book and players sprout through the linoleum tiles to align at my game table. I have a steady group, but if I ever need more people I go to the game store and talk loudly about my seeking players and/or I hang a sign. It's always worked when I've tried.

Happanstance mostly. either a person see's me looking a DnD stuff in the bookstore or in one case reading the Dragon in an all night diner. Or they know someone who points them my way, of course the groups lately get scattered or broken up by the Real Life Monster,
