D&D 5E (2014) How does the Artificer play?

I'm thinking of running a Gnome Artificer and was wondering if anyone has played one yet? If so how does it handle in play and how does it stack up to the other wizard traditions?

I'm running a gnomish artificer in a homebrewed Dragonlance game, and I love it! His ready supply of healing potions has kept party members on their feet, and the ability to imbue ammunition has made our archer even more devastating to our enemies. This build is the closest thing to a generalist wizard for 5E in my opinion.
