I would not write out 3PP doing 3.X stuff just yet. Look at Mutants and Masterminds, it survives just fine on its own, with no need of support from "standard" 3.e stuff. I am sure that the current 3.x field WILL shrink, that is just how the market works. But a not insignificant number of people are either NOT switching to 4e for whatever reason, or, like me, are playing both 4e and older versions of the game.
As I said earlier, just because lots of people bought the initial runs of 4e does not mean it has succeeded or has more players. It just means people want to check out the new version. We won't really know how successful it is for months yet, when people have had a chance to play some, and the new books are released. Then we can see if the same sales figures are sustained or not.
