How does the residuum look like?

Strands of the tail of a unicorn, phoenix feathers, the petrified heart of an angel, the calcified crystals that form around the fountain of youth, essence of the black lotus flower that only grows in the high mountains to the west, dust gathered from pixies at midnight on the night of the full moon. Stuff like that.

Really, anything that used to be a spell component is probably fair game since as how now all you need to cast a spell these days is a wand or staff.

A pretty good list can be found here: http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/magic/metamagicComponents.htm

Here's a thought:

You get 1 gp residuum from disenchanting a healing potion. So that's the minimum.
If 1gp residuum weighs a grain, then almost exactly 7000 gp residuum weighs a pound.
A level 30 magic item, base price 3125000 gp needs residuum weighing almost 450 pounds.

450 POUNDS!

;)

If it has a physical representation at all, I'd assume it can look like lots of different things. Similar to the Vis sources in Ars Magica, depending on the kind of magic it represents (power source, school, etc.).

It's never seen. The characters know what it is, but the players don't.

It's the stuff that dreams are made of.

It contains the secret to happiness.

It's a little robot that carries the plans to a battle station.
