On an almost serious note, the Forsaker* may be playable in 4e.

I'd consider residuum some kind of powder, but I like the idea that magic energy starts out tied to fantastical resources like vis from Ars Magica.

*) 3.0 Masters of the Wild, can't use magic items, gets damage reduction for breaking magic items.

I picture it being specific bits of the item in question. Like you could get the residuum from a ring in the form of the gem, then use it in making a sword by setting the gem in the hilt.
