How far away can you see a Volcano?

I know this is a strange question, but being from Texas (flat), I really have no clue about how far away you can actually see a Volcano.

I'm setting up for the Shackled City adventure and I'm wondering if Cauldron's volcano can be seen from Sasserine (almost a hex north of it). My players will be traveling from Sasserine to Cauldron, and I'm simply wondering at what point they'll be able to see it.

Any clues would be appreciated :)

Just like any mountain I guess. If it erupts that is usually visible (at least the ash is) if the mountain is visible.

Thank you, that helps. :)

The only time I've ever seen a mountain (other than from airplanes) was a long time ago when I went to Fairbanks, Alaska. I vaguely remember that a huge mountain (actually a whole range of blue and white peaks) was clearly visible on the horizon, but it was supposed to be many miles away. It actually appeared to be part of the horizon itself.

There are no mountains around Dallas, so I didn't have much of a reference. Thanks again.

Usually, the air's opacity will hide it before it falls below the horizon, even on a fairly clear day in most climates. Maybe in a desert this wouldn't be true, I don't know.

It depends alot on the viewer's elevation, and the height of the volcano.

When I'm at the top of the ski slopes north of Vancouver Canada on a clear day, I can see Mount Raineer in Washington, around 150 miles away. But that's an exceptionally large volcano, at 14000 feet it's taller than most mountain ranges.
