How far can you see in the dark?

First Post
After our party was ambushed by horse archers in the dark, a question arose. How far exactly can you see in moonlight or starlight outside at night? We didn't find anything in either the DMG or PHB (3.5 or 3.0), besides the ranges for torches and other light sources, and degrees of illumination (torchlight, shadowy light and no illumination). Since the moon was waxing, I ruled that, for the time being, you could see like it was daytime (we were in hills, so line of sight was limited anyway), but the prevailing illumination was shadowy, giving a 20% miss chance. Halved for low-light vision and eliminated for darkvision within 60'.

Is there an official rule for this? If not, does anyone have better house rules than I do, or am I going to have to dig up my 1e Wilderness Survival Guide?

From the 3.5e SRD "Abilities and Conditions":

LOW-LIGHT VISION
Characters with low-light vision have eyes that are so sensitive to light that they can see twice as far as normal in dim light. Low-light vision is color vision. A spellcaster with low-light vision can read a scroll as long as even the tiniest candle flame is next to her as a source of light.
Characters with low-light vision can see outdoors on a moonlit night as well as they can during the day.

I would rule that a moonlit night is shadowy illumination in an unlimited radius. Creatures without low-light vision or darkvision can see to any range, but suffer a 20% miss chance for concealment. Creatures with low-light vision see as well as in daylight, so the miss chance is eliminated for them. Creatures with darkvision have no miss chance to the limit of their darkvision.
