How has the 4e/3e schism affected you?

In the past, when I thought about D&D, it made me happy.

Now, when I think about D&D, it makes me sad.

So now when I'm bored, I try to think more of cool screen activity in Medieval 2: Total War, rather than cool D&D stuff that's been my default daydreaming for the past 27 years . . .

Basically, 4e coming out is like getting dumped by a girlfriend -- something you want to move on from and just not think about it, but it keeps coming up again. (Maybe one should stop going to this site?)

But once I get back to playing 3.5 regularly again (both my groups are temporarily apart with people gone away for a while), I'll have found someone better and not have to try not to think about D&D anymore. :)

We have had no problems at our game table. Kent and I are the only people willing to DM the campaign and neither of us have any interest in 4E. That said when Pathfinder comes out we will probably make the move there, as I see some of the Pathfinder rules already creepying into our session.

Of course, we're talking about a town where another guy got into a physical altercation about the correct pronunciation of "drow" at the FLGS, too (dude assaulted the store manager when he was asked to leave the store following the a loud, unfriendly, argument about said pronunciation) :(

Some people really need a good, hard Stooge-slapping.

Everyone I know who plays D&D is excited about playing 4e.

A couple guys at the local gaming store who don't actually play D&D anymore like to make snide comments about how "4e ripped off WoW." I shrug, tell them that obviously they'd know better than me because they play WoW and I don't, and point out that even if WoW recharge rates are set to roughly approximate "one fight" for certain abilities, and even if 4e's encounter powers are analogous to that, so what? Good game design is good game design, and 3e did the same thing with "minute per level" at low levels, and "rounds per level" at high levels.

The only schisms I see are on forums. There is no schism in my group as nobody has a remote interest in playing 4e. Then again off forums I don't know anyone interested in 4e and neither do my gaming friends whether they be my players that play in multiiple groups or friends that play in completely different groups.

Out of the five of us who play, two of us have tried 4e and want to play more, one of us is curious but doesn't want to buy more books and two of us are vehemently opposed to 4e on the grounds of not wanting to buy more books, not liking the sound of the system and not wanting to learn a new system and they are unwilling to try it at all. So, pretty much an even split.

Right now, we're playing Shadowrun rather than DnD, so it hasn't become a problem as yet.

There has been a spirited, but in no way heated, discussion on my group's private message boards. We're mid-campaign with 11th level characters and a solid story arc still ahead of us, and nobody's excited enough to switch horses mid-stream. We'll likely try to work in some Pathfinder and/or 4E-esque house rules into the game at some point; once the campaign is over, we can have a serious discussion on how to move forward. Hopefully by then we'll have the final Pathfinder release to look at, and have some one-shot or mini-campaign experience with 4E, so we can make an informed decision after due deliberation.

I've had one* real life discussion about 3e v 4e. It was weird because the other guy, Mark, was making points that up until that then I'd only ever heard online. I assumed only internet posters held those views, not actual flesh and blood people. The conversation, and the points we were both making, were pretty much identical to an ENWorld 3e v 4e debate. We didn't come to blows however.

*Actually two. The second time Mark wanted to raise his criticisms of the 4e vampire and lich stats with me at a party but I was kind of tired of 4e news at that point and hadn't read the articles.

No worries, no problems. Two groups (total 11 guys) and all are happy to move forward with something new: 4e.

We had a 12th guy, but I won't mention what his preference was...no one will be seeing him again.

Muwauahahhahahaha!
