How house rules are changing my Scout. Now with an exciting update as of 8/29/05

i am all for a DM changing things around to suit his game, but there should be something written doen to go by, even if it is very broad.

Personally i think if the DM dislikes the scouts playbalance so much, it should besimply disallowed.

Unless you're desperate for a game, I would prolly just say, "No thanks!"

Nothing against house rules, but I detect a mountain of inconsistency coming your way....

Yeah, I am going to talk to him and see if I can get a list of changes. I also agree that I am seeing a lot of inconsistencies heading my way.

I wouldn't say I am desperate, but it has been a while since I have played. Plus this is his hombrewed world and I told him I would play to help him flesh it out more.

One time I told him flat out, when he talked to me about playing, that this seems more like D&D D20 the way you always wanted it.

...ugh.

So a friend of mine asked me to play D&D, with some heavy house rules. Mainly he changed a lot of things he thought were wrong with D&D, made it his own RPG basicly...anyway.

Some of the things he changed were some things the Scout gets for leveling up. Here is a list of things he removed from the Scout:

Trapfinding (Didn't really give me a reason that I could understand through his mumbling)
Battle Fortitude (took this away because he gave us three points to allocate towards saves)
Hide in plain Sight (he didn't think Scouts should have it since no one else could do it)
Trackless Step (no reason, not even a mumble)

Now I am a little torn about playing the Class. I can't help but feel that I am being cheated out of some pretty good abilities. I am pretty sure I can talk him in to giving me back the Battle Fortitude in exchange for the three points.

But what are your thoughts? Am I being too nervous or do I have a valid reason for feeling cheated?

So I talked to the DM about his changes, here is what he said.

Trapfinding: I never took that away from you (Although I distinctly remember him telling me I didn't have it and confirmed it with me when I repeated it back to him.)

Battle Fortitude: Replaced with the three points to be allocated to the saves. (eh)

**now here is where we started arguing**

Hide In Plain Sight: It's broken. It doesn't make sense that you can hide right in front of someone while they are looking at you. (I tried to explain to him where he was wrong with this way of thinking. I knew he thought this too. He didn't have to explain to me I already knew.)

Trackless Step: It's stupid that a ranger/druid/scout/equilivant class couldn't track another one of these classes. It's also stupid that if someone took the Track feat they still couldn't track the above classes. (Ok, the first part. Who is to say that the above classes can't track each other? This is easily resolved with "If the PC/NPC is of equilivant level or higher of the before mentioned class, then they can track the lower level class." This is to represent that they know the tricks of the trade and what to look for. Now the other part. I tried to explain to him that yes, the person who too Track, can techinically track...but. They don't know the same things as the above classes, so they don't know the tricks to look for.)

So, needless to say we didn't make any progress on this. He wouldn't budge and I told him that I am going to see if there something else I want to play. But in reality I don't see anything that I want to try knowing that it might not be what I see...

**SOME OF THE HOUSE RULES**
All classes get a standard HD/Level of D8 (except Barbarian who gets a D8+3).
All classes who get 2 Skill Points/Level will get 4/level instead
(Correction) Clerics are a part of the world and get a new domain every fifth level.

That's all for now...Ugh.

>wince<

As I said...

Okay, so this week there are clerics, and next week everyone's HD revert to PH rules, and the week after you don't get ability increases, and the week after multiclassing's different, and....

Throw in the towel, man. He's not going to run a game that would be enjoyable to me; I like to know that the rules will be the same next session as this session, otherwise my choices for the character I'm playing are invalid. How can I decide whether it's worth taking Toughness if it gives me 10 hp today but only 3 hp in two levels?

I'd express to him that this isn't working for you and walk away. "Yeah, I want to help you playtest your homebrewed system, but not until you have it written out and I know how it's going to work."

Yeah, I am seriously thinking that throwing in the towel is the better option. Like I said, I asked him for all this in writing. I gave him an example of a DM I play with on Sundays who has a website dedicated to his world.
Infact, here is a link to it http://members.aol.com/leroygomm/GameDomainAeonic.htm

I told him I want to see something like this setup...and I am still waiting.

Then again, there's always the chance that in actual play he'll really shine.

I wouldn't count on it, but it might be worth giving him a chance. >shrug<

Yuck.... I don't mind playing in a game with house rules, but at least make them constant! Changing from one time to another just doesn't work! It doesn't make the game much fun with constantly changing rules....
