How I fell in and out of love with Pick and Mix in 20 minutes

Seriously?

I picked up Pterra-dactyl on a CD of (supposedly, I guess) license-free fonts in 2000. This could be problematic.

2. Are there going to be changes made to the section which declares that all content is open? There is no way we'll release P&M products if our artwork becomes OGC.

Done.

Looking at the Indesign file that is included, there is a section that is labeled for declaration of OGC and declaration of Product Identity, but isn't that section moot since by the license everything is OGC anyway?

Yes, but someone without a copy of the license doesn't know that, do they? Plus the OGL requires that OGC be clearly identified.

I think we will pull the zip file until we have settled on the replacement font. The selection is happening now.

(update: I have also contacted the author of the font to apologize and offer recompense)

Yes. There are also some additional stipulations with the font if it is ever used for print if I recall correctly. One thing to consider is there are copy cat fonts of almost every font out there that are free since fonts are not copyrightable. Not sure if there is such a font for Pterra though... I purchased the original through MyFonts.com

Wow, that was fast. Thanks Morrus!

I'll definitely say that these are wicked fast to put together. I have our first one done in a matter of minutes. Great work on the template. Now to set up our publisher's account...

That's the real beauty of it, especially if you're an existing publisher. The effort involved in making one using the template is so tiny, and most publishers already have so much stuff lying around that they can use.

As an author who works almost entirely in Modern genre stuff, who thinks Pick'n'Mix would be useful Cross-Genre ...

How about a new font that's not genre-specific? Just something sort of normal ... Pterra was pretty "fantasy" looking to me. It's just aesthetics, sure, but figured I'd give a shout out.

I'll second that. Maybe even a couple choices of fonts which could serve as genre indicators.

One thing I'm noticing with the P&Ms is that they are getting tacked on to other purchases. I think I may have to put some more notices on them around the checkout area... Consider them candy-bars at the grocery store!

Ladies and Gentlemen, the ENWorld GS has brought point-of-purchase marketing to PDFs. Incredible.

You know what would be really neat? If the checkout page suggested other products (especially other Pick 'n' Mix products) that would compliment what the customer already has in the cart. Nothing too intrusive, but just to really bring home the "point-of-purchase" type sales. I imagine this would be an extra bit of database work, so I'm not sure about the feasability of such a thing. Then again, the main site is supposed to display products of interest based on past purchases, so maybe it wouldn't be so hard after all...

It already does this, Roudi. And yes, it uses the same Recommend algorithm. This algorithm is 'trade secret' of course... But it's based off the number of similarities between a products short and long description, then given weight based on system, category, author, and publisher. I like to think it's pretty slick myself! :)
