D&D 5E (2014) How I think HoTDQ should of been handled.

I would, except that FR is now the flagship/core setting and "the lore" has been folded into all of the 5E manuals. It's infected everything, like a (spell)plague.

Actually not really. The stuff in the 5e books is still fairly generic with stuff taken from multiple settings. The most common being Greyhawk and the Realms. Given that Greyhawk was the default it more or less means not much has changed. Also FR is not the Core setting the D&D multiverse is. FR is just were the first adventures are taking place.

Anyway in the Realms the High Level NPC's are not aware of everything going on in the realms. Guys like Elminster are off mysteriously doing their own thing. Which can be important to the realms as a whole or important to them. Guys like Drizzt and the Companions while high level are still mortal and can be threatened by a large gang of monsters. (They would be around the level 15 to 17 mark.) They tend to deal with more local problems in their area and are while you may hear of them are unlikely to see them.

In Greyhawk which also has high level NPC's they tend to be selfish and are in pursuit of wealth rather then looking to solve all the problems around them.

Are you taking the piss or are you serious?

What lore is in the books that keep you from ignoring it?

Just to expand on this.

Their existence is not known by all unless you meta game.

Uhm, no thanks. Pass.

AFAIK, all of the modules, adventures, etc. for 5E so far are set in the Realms. All of them. Kinda hard to ignore, really.

Ignore that it's in the Realms. You can put Greenest and make it the Cult of Tiamat and you're all set.

You are putting your own roadblocks in the way, you aren't interested in the fact that there is nothing stopping you from ignoring the lore.

And there are also smaller things like how nearly all racial excerpts come from FR novels.

Except when you want to use the provided factions, etc.

You aren't making any sense.

You want to use the established factions but you don't want to use their lore.

*scratches head in pure confusion*

The factions are built into the module to provide very specific rewards and benefits. If you ignore them because of the FR lore, you lose all of that stuff for players. It's integrated into the module. OTOH, if you want to keep the factions and benefits but de-couple it from FR, you have a lot of rewriting to do. This is not that hard to understand.

I had more here, but forget it. I'm done trying to explain things to people who can only hear their own voice.

Carry on!
