I've played four characters so far, first was a fighter that I multi-class with sorcerer, he's currently a fighter 14/sorcerer 7, second doesn't meet your criteria he's a evocer 5/elemental sav. 2, third a ranger 5/fighter 1/devoted defender 2, and finally my newest character is a Rogue 3/cleric 1.
As you can see i like to multi-class.
most the other people in my gruop have as well we had a rogue/wizard/fighter/duelist, a necromancer/cleric, and a samurai/ranger to name a few.
To sum up I'd say 75% is pretty close to the mark.

Players can multiclass in two classes in my campaign, and can go PrC, and they must take at least two levels in the secondary class. If they want more classes, or only one level of something, I require a well-reasoned explanation that includes the character's history and original goals, what they have been through to this point and how it has changed them, and why based on this, they want the extra class.

33% actually, but I chose 25% on the poll. The only two muti-classed characters in a party of six chose to go with a psionic secondary class because when the book first came out we thought it was so cool.

Right now we have:
Human Fighter3/Psychic Warrior2
Human Rogue3/Psion2
Human Cleric5 (soon to be 6th, and then soon to be a Radiant Servant of Pelor at level 7, I think)
Wizard 4 (level five due to race)
Half Elf Bard 4
Human Rogue5/Assassin1 (the dm's (me) NPC)

So far, the multi-classing has just been to add dimension to the rogue and fighter, and give them something to role play off of. It's worked out nicely.

Cheers!

In our group it's 4 out of 5
We changed from 2nd ed to 3rd with same characters, so we got quite high level character at the beginning.
My character is Drd8/Rng1, next levels as divine champion (took the ranger level to qualify one level earlier)
Others are:
Rng8/Rog1 (just took the rogue level, going to take more of it (Kinda a scout))
Clr4/Wis3 (originally multiclassed in 2nd ed, Priest of Mystra)
Illusionist 5/Rog1 (our Gnome)
And Fighter 8 (going to take Dwarven Battle Rager next level forward)

My last campaign was way back when all that was out was the players handbook so things have changed a bit.

Out of the party of six we had one semi multi, a sorcerer with a rogue level or 2 and a fighter who was planning to go swashbuckler with a few rogue levels.

Last dnd game I was in was a little wierd and mostly 2e with 3e bits so I won't mention it.

Wellll...

Hmm. I like multiclassing myself. Got a barbarian ranger rogue bard sorcerer. He always learned the skills the group lacked. So a lvl of rogue here, a level of bard (more healing) there, a lvl of ranger (lost in the wilderness)...

But our characters are mainly multiclassed since it's a lowmagic campaign and spellcasters get too powerful if they don't have to multiclass :)

Besides: Fighter barbarian multiclassing or similar things are nearly impossible,...

Ranger barbarian is sometimes ok. Wilderness guys...

Well multiclassing has to have a story. And it usually takes months to learn a new class (if it's sooo different from your previous ones).

A long time ago we multied a lot, but for like the past 8 months at least no one has multied (there have been PrC) the munchkiness in us had just taken over, a few players one in a blue moon will take Ranger (one level) for his dual-weapon (frontloaded) feats or paladin (one level) for his Cha save bonus.

Though I chose the 25% option, it's actually 20% in my campaign...1 out of 5. The ranger took a level of rogue, since they were always blundering into traps and having to break down every locked door they encountered.

But I'm considering having the dwarf fighter NPC take a level in something else...maybe become a cleric of Clanggeddin?

We've got (started at 1st, currently 6th):

gold-dwaf fighter/cleric of Moradin
aasimar paladin of Torm (dead)
aasimar sorcerer
tiefling rogue
human monk
human cleric of Mask/rogue
wild-elf druid of Silvanus

and in another campaign (started at 4th, currently 5th):

wood-elf fighter/ranger
human monk
half-orc barbarian (dead)
human psychic warrior
human sorcerer
human cleric of Helm (dead)
wild-elf fighter
human sorcerer (dead)
