How is YOUR Forgotten Realms Different?

Shem,

Eh I don't. Mostly cause I pictured AO as the Ken Lay of Overgods. All he does is golf, pick up the pay checks (which he cashes for himself), and tries to make himself look important even though he's not.

Poz,

Do as you want. While I'm favor of keeping SL clean of other influences, doesn't mean it can't work the other way. :) Especially for the Scarred Lands "infecting" the Realms.

Toril in general is a significant, but not central, location in important events - that is, the interplay between the great powers of wildspace.

Involved gods... aren't. I don't like FR-style meddling gods, especially since not all the worlds I'm using have them.

The setting has advanced 50 years from the current FRCS, and some of the current/past events were changed around a bit. The major bits:

Fourty years ago, cities of the Sword Coast bought up major firearms shipments from the scro (who were in turn buying them from Caen and Arcanis). Concerned about a possible alliance on the doorstep of Evermeet, the Elven Imperial Navy convinced Evermeet's royalty to launch a preemptive strike on Waterdeep and Luskan, the primary importers. Luskan was sacked, Waterdeep badly damaged, and the fighting eventually spilled out to cover most of the Sword Coast. Human reinforcements from Thay (see below), Shou-Lung and allied worlds repulsed the invasion, and the surviving Sword Coast became a federal body known as the Waterdhavian Alliance.
Thay is Faerun's greatest power and probably the third or fourth greatest power in space (after the Elven Imperial Navy, the scro and, arguably, the Hu-Charad giants of Dor-Erthenos). It is the primary supplier of magic items to the Known Spheres, especially to human countries, and the lynchpin of the League of Spelljamming Races formed to oppose elven and scro domination. Szass-Tam is the Chancellor of the League (and, yes, he does sound like Palpatine. ;) )
Shou-Lung is the second most important country after Thay, followed by Waterdeep. The rest of the world is mostly groundling and increasingly weak. Several of these minor powers have been overthrown by groundling orcs with support from the scro, including Zhentil Keep and the Silver Marches; the scro are also heavily involved in Rashemen, fanning the flames of hatred against Thay. Most elven enclaves have been ostracized since the invasion of the Sword Coast; most humanoids are more likely to side with scro than elves on Toril.

Of the (in?)famous Chosen and assorted named good guy NPCs, only Khelben is a major player, and that only because he's a Lord of Waterdeep and Councillor of the League of Spelljamming Races.

Do you run a FR campaign? What have you changed about the basic setting? Have you imported classes/races/gods/nations/ from other game settings (Scarred Lands,Eberron, Arcana Evolved,etc.). Have you changed entire countries to your liking?

I've always had a love/hate relationship with FR. I like the basic world, but can't stand most of the named characters. The FR pantheon has always been a little "loose" for my tastes, but a few of the gods interest me. On the backburner in my mind is a homebrewed FR setting. I'm thinking of either changing the gods completely, or porting in gods from other settings to take over the places of some "native" gods. I like Chardun from the Scarred Lands much better than I like Bane. However, I've always been a fan of Mark Smylies (spelling?) pantheon from his Artesia series.
I'm also thinking about changing some of the nations and geographical features (that gigantic #^$&ing desert annoys the hell out of me). I'll probably get rid of the Chosen, also, although I've always had a soft spot for the Seven Sisters.

Tell me what you've done to change your Forgotten Realms Setting.

Mostly I omit some of the native creatures that I simply don't care for. All the powerful NPCs live there, but they rarely appear in games. When they do, it's only to offer some helpful information or to be the one to give PCs a mission.

Several of my PCs are higher in level than many of the powerful NPCs, but they're not demigods, Chosen, Avatars or anything like that.

The Realms pantheon is supposed to be the exclusive influential pantheon of the world, and so it is with my version of the setting. Not all PCs worship those Powers, but only those Powers grant divine spells and abilities.

That's about it. It's mostly used simply as a place to adventure, equally as good as any other place. I wouldn't change any of the geographical features, because they define the setting and give it personality, so to speak. There's a good reason why Anauroch and the Great Glacier exist. If you want to change 'em, I'd recommend making that possible as part of some epic campaign, and not simply reshaping to other terrain features.

Happy gaming,
Eric

Why am I not at all surprised at this? ;) :D

*grin*

I just revealed that little bit of lore in my last SH1 update actually. It's not something that becomes a major plot point, but it's just more background for the BBEG (one of them anyways). Though, for what it's worth, it does get touched upon later when the PCs have reason to visit the ruins of Karse in the Dire Wood.

Nice!

Back when 3.0 was new and SWd20 had just came out I had dreams of the Empire blasting Waterdeep (and other locales) with a bombardment from space with Star Destroyers... followed by a march of Walkers.

The only major changed I made....

It still needs a little bit of work...I also need to draw close ups of the islands. One of the larger islands is going to be the seat of the Shade Empire. Also Cormyr has two ports, Ascore has been reopened by Silver Marches, and the Zhents have a port.
