I suppose it varies on how big of a houserule it ends up being as well. Smaller changes mostly for flavor area pretty easy to do and usually aren't big, cascading mechanical changes.

But the bigger impact ones are usually "after a few adventures" when you really feel that pain point and identify what impacts the change would have.
 

I'd rather avoid house ruling if I must, but I always apply my own RPG "philosophies" to any games with binary pass/fail mechanics. Most of the time, however, the games that I like already include my type of ideas in their rules.

I usually know if I want to tweak things after playing a few sessions, so I answered "After a few adventures".
 

I voted ‘after a few adventures’ but it would be more accurate to say ‘after a few sessions’. Enough of a sample time to be confident there was an issue we wanted to do something about. I also prefer to minimise house rules.
 




Usually I'll already start houseruling during session 0 or 1 if I already know players are looking for a certain type of experience or game and adjust accordingly.
Can you give an example of something you have houseruled before even playing because you knew your group would not like the rule as designed?
