How long to watch a thread

How long do people usually watch a thread for?

I have found many threads where tags (sometimes not formal tags) were sent out to people, but were never responded to. I have done this twice recently, once to Gez and some time ago to MerricB, but alas no relies..:(

Well, looking back, the one to Gez was not an official tag at all, just a calling out to the greatness of his post and how we do similar things in the "should sorcerer's have seperate spell lists thread".

There are also many times when people post details (usually upon request) but no-one gets back and says how useful the material was or heaven forbid THANKS.

Am I being to sentimental? Should we make more effort to keep track of old threads we have participated on? Most importantly how long do you watch a thread for after posting.

I don't post to too many, so I have a folder in bookmarks titled "Current threads" indicating the threads I am currently watching and I always try to reply to those who 'tagged' me. I guess I can afford to wait around a month before I let a thread go...but some of you post way more than I...toughts?

I watch for about 3 to 4 pages. By then the "fresh" ideas have already been given and the preaching of "how you should do it" begins in earnest.

I guess, just what you have done here. You are expecting a reponse from myself and so many of these go unnoticed :(

No big deal, I was just wondering how others tackled this. You see many threads and someone will come on late and whilst reading go ' yeah I like what that person had to say', so they post to the thread praising the previous poster, but it usually goes ignored, as that person has moved on....Maybe i should ;)

I guess what I am saying is 'hey, stick around. go back and check some threads you posted to as someone may have had something to say about your ideas/thoughts' :)

BTW thanks for changing categories. I seem to always get this wrong. I now see my were eel thread should probably have gone in the NPC/Rogues Gallery topic.

Fair point. Couldn't agree more. especially those that get WAY off-topic like the new LM (undead book) thread that became a fight b/w two PrC's and then a physics lecture on energy. Mind you I loved what seenkreynolds put in that thread and couldn't agree more (see how easy to go off-topic :p )

I guess I am talking about those threads you have posted to with some ideas/thoughts, not just throw away lines or a quick call of support. One's where you have a say...and someone is likely to reply to you.

When you post to a lot of different threads, it's hard to remember where all those different threads are the next day. Especially if you're old, like me.

I use the Search function to find my name quite often, but even that doesn't find all the "tags" since not everyone mentions your name when replying to you.

So how long do I watch a thread? About a minute. Then it has to come back to my attention somehow if I'm going to look at it again.

If I am really interested in following a thread I use the "subscribe" function. Which didn't send me a single notification the last time i activated it on a thread.

I tend to ignore a thead once it's passed 10 pages. And I tend to lose threads, too. Always a suprise, finding a response to a comment I made, when I am days past a thread, forgetting than I replied in the first place.

Wondering why this thread is considered OT rather than META?

Guessing I'll find a suprise answer in a few days ;p.

I usually follow a thread quite long if I actually posted and hope for answers or additions to it.
Sometimes I follow a thread a long time regardless of my participation, but if they get to big or jump to the second page, I will not continue, unless it reemerges.
