How long to watch a thread

Short Attention Span :)

I tend to lose threads when they fall off page 1 -

I'm usually breazing through, checking Story Hour, General RPG, and now, Off-Topic... and can't remember the names of all of the threads that I find interesting...

I'm going to restart using the subscribe feature, though, because several Story Hours that I wanted to follow only post every 3 or 4 weeks

If I am really interested in following a thread I use the "subscribe" function. Which didn't send me a single notification the last time i activated it on a thread.

Unless things have changed, the e-mail portion of thread subscriptions was turned off months and months ago because of the load it caused on the server. Some of the popular story hours had hundreds of people subscribed and the server couldn't handle all the notifications without slowing down, especially because these same story hours attracted new posts often.

As for the original question, I tend to follow threads I am interested in for as long as they are active. As long as people are still discussing it, I'll keep checking in. However, it's much more common that my post will kill (be the last post in) a thread than that it will be quoted or commented upon.

I basically follow them long enough to note that my opinions usually get ignored, even when I make the same points that someone else makes but I actually make them first, about two pages before. :( I guess I just don't have that magic touch or something. :D

Ah, not this time Dave. As I started this post I intend on watching it until the end ;)...Oh and Samothdm has posted after you too. :)

There you go. Killed 2 birds with one stone. Somothdm, your post has not been ignored. :)

May I suggest, simply bookmarking threads you post to (as I mentioned earlier) and then it is easy checking them, even if you only do a few a day. That way you will eventually go back to a thread where someone may have made a call out to you. If nothing changes after 3 'looks' then maybe it drop it. Easy for me, I don't get involved in too many posts :heh:

Now I had better make sure I keep my eye on this thread.

And the rest! Something like PC's story hour had, literally, thousands of people subscribed, which meant that every time someone posted to or bumped it, the server would immediately send out several thousand emails - usually causing the server to slow down or crash. There are other threads with similar numbers of subscribers.

For reference, though, subscribing still lists the thread in your control panel, so it's still a a great was to keep track of threads.

I'll check ENworld once per day in a binge-check. The next day, I'll survey all threads going back to the point where my previous binge stopped. Anything beyond that point, even if I'm interested in it, obviously has nothing new of interest. The one exception? When I've posted a thread and had negligible response, I might bump it once or twice.

Also, if a topic I've already viewed starts to bore me, I'll leave it alone in future.

There, that's how I watch threads.

I thought the correct number range was 'thousands of subscribers,' but I wasn't sure and I didn't want to exaggerate through ignorance, so I lowered my estimate to 'hundreds.' Well, I'll remember that for next time. Thanks for chiming in with the correct info, Russ.

And thanks to both Russ and Connorsrpg for quoting and responding to one of my posts! A little validation feels good now and then. :)

Ahhhh..that is what I am talking about. That, I guess is the reason for this very thread :)

Depends on the thread - Some threads are just too good not to follow but then they stay on page one, after a they go to page 3 nothing new is really being said.

Oh, I take advanage of the New Post option. ;)
