How Many Monsters Have You Actually Used?

It would also be worth noting what percentages of other aspects of the game people are using. How many of the spells, feats, prestige classes, magic items, an so on are people using?

Are monster books being picked on unfairly, or is it because the other aspects of the game I mentioned aren't the sole focus of books (Spell Compendium being the notable exception).

For me, I'd much rather have a large number of monsters to choose from, and only use half or less, than have a smaller number and possilby end up using none or just a couple. It's a better return on investment.

3.5 srd (I don't have the 3.5 MM).
This does not count 3.0 and earlier edition monsters.

So I count 75 3.5 srd creatures.

I've got a pretty high usage out of my MM, probably between 75-85% of monsters used. Skimming through the SRD monster list I'm using most of the creatures. I only see 2 A's I didnt use, 1 B and 3Cs. Actually it's closer to 2 unused Cs since I statted up some Chuul but the party did a side treck that avoided them. Virtually all the outsiders have been used, either via summons or Gates, thanks to high level casters on both sides.

The MMII & MMIII's section on fey and plant creatures was mined heavily for a trip Underhill, Slaad were the basis of one group of baddies, and I've used a lot of giants.
I've probably used less of the MMII & III simply b/c my game was at higher levels by the time they came out. I've used at least 30% of both books I'd say.

The aquatic creatures have seen the least amount of use but I've only managed to have 2 sea voyages so far.

So, how many monsters have you used? Is 44% about the magic number? Or has someone actually used every monster in one of their books?

Demiurge out.

75/246 = a little less than 1/3 for 3.5 srd.

I don't think I've used all the monsters from any monster book in any edition, the closest would be new monsters from modules such as Lord of the Iron Fortress (used both the bladelings and steel predators).

I think monster books are some of the most fun to read though and I like having plenty of options to fit what I want to use. I get a bunch of monster books even though I don't use most of the material I get.

It is also worth noting that entire "themes" of monsters might not be used until the time is right. If your campaign has been landlocked, you may have no need for aquatic creatures. But once the campaign leads the party over/into the ocean, you'll suddenly use many aquatic monsters.

That's another reason I'm a big proponent of more monsters/less other stuff in monster books.
