How many nobles to screw in a kingdom?

I recommend Gary Gygax's Living Fantasy as the definitive description of medieval/renaissance-type social structures in a D&D context.

Actually your user name brings up an interest point in that besides the estates of the nobility there were the clerical estates held by Prelates under Papal authority. There was often significant tension between the more worldly Bishops and the territorial nobility.

How this might work in a polytheistic system is anyones guess...
