2e is probably best left in my past; nowadays the non-weapon proficiency system grates on me like nails on a blackboard.
I agree wholeheartedly. Though honestly, the non-weapon proficiency system grated on me like nails on a blackboard even back when we were still playing 2e. I can't imagine anything that would make me want to play that system again, short of a huge pile of cash...and that only because I could really use a huge pile of cash.

Never really played OD&D or 1e, but considering that they aren't renowned for doing the style of game that I really like (the skill-heavy intrigue/mystery variety) and I have lots of other game systems that are renowned for being able to do exactly those styles of games, I'm not sure what would make me want to try 'em out.

besides the aforementioned huge pile of cash, i guess ;)

I did the vast amount of my D&D playing under 1e and then slightly less under 2e, so I would have no problems going back as long as it was not a replacement for 3.5e. I think the latest version is far superior to its predecessors.

It would depend, probably 'Never'.

Personally, I can't see any significant good reasons to use an older edition, but if the DM came up with some good reasons, I'd consider it.

With a good DM, yes, but probably only Basic/Rules Cyclopedia rather than AD&D (1E or 2E).

I grew to hate 1E and 2E (and OD&D) with a passion greater than Diaglo's contempt for d20; I don't think I could sully myself with a return to them. ;)

For a one-shot or a short term (maybe two or three sessions) sure. I'll play anything if it's fun, or the group is good, or the DM is good.

Longterm? Meh. It would take a pretty good gaming group to convince me to do it.

Part of the question involves knowing if I'm going to run a core-rules version of 1e, or how heavily modded 2e would be. I'm sorry, but 2nd Edition AD&D out of the box sucked in a MAJOR way. Most people who call it The Game of Kings don't play 2nd Edition. They play a houseruled conglomerate which is more like a heavily tweaked Mandrake distro Linux box than a fresh Redhat install.
