For me, 3-4 players is optimal. 2 is too small a group, IMO to handle everything that I would want to throw at them, and 5-6 is doable. More than that, and there's too many folks around to have any actual roleplaying, it seems, plus it's too easy to have characters get lost in the crowd. Obviously, I prefer a more roleplaying type of environment rather than big groups of explorers/dungeoncrawlers, in which case I'd probably revise that number up fairly easily.

Currently I have 3.

ENWorld supposedly isn't representative of the gaming population.

In a number of ways, EN World is clearly not representative of the gaming population. The majority of the gaming population don't hang out on gaming-related message boards. The majority of the gaming population is also far less well informed on products and happenings in the RPG business than most EN World folks. Just those points mean quite a bit when considering us as statistics.

We currently have 6 PC's and the DM (go the_Universe for dealing with us:) )
--though each few months the PC number seems to change by one or two. Though all transitions have been smooth :)

Scheduling can be an issue, but we have agreed to play with one and only one down. With 6 it can make fights go slower, but we have started the roll once at the begining of each fight for initiative and just keep it. So far it seems like a great deal, and speeds up the process.

The group that I inherited has 9 players plus myself. It makes for some challenging game sessions, but they are always enjoyable. There's often times small group interactions which I observe, but let the players handle themselves. There's a lot going on at our game sessions, but everyone has fun, and that is what is important.

I have usually found that 1 GM, 4 players is the optimal grouping (for almost any system).

My current group has 5 players, which is certainly in the "reasonable" spread :)

Our group has been running continuously almost every Friday night for 7 years and there has always been 6 players and 1 DM (ages 17 - 41).
