how might i solve this puzzle?

When you say all melee-types, how melee is melee? What I mean is, are you all fighters, or do you perhaps have a rogue or a bard in the mix? I don't know the solution to the puzzle, but I'd imagine that a good Gather Information roll, or a Bardic Knowledge check, might yield some results.

If you don't have access, consider hiring someone, either a bard for the Knowledge, a rogue for G.I. Or just going the direct route and hiring a wizard to dispel the darned thing.

Here's my guess:

Is the light coming from the fountain or the water?

You've already been told that the password is "darkness". Extinguish or cover all of your light sources so that the only thing giving off light in the room is the fountain.

Then, cause the water to disappear. If the light is coming from the water, then you should be in complete darkness. Search around and see if anything's changed (a door appears, perhaps?)

You can test to see if the "disappearing water" and the "No water enters" conditions can be satisfied at once - have one party member try to pour water in while another tries to drink. See what happens.

well, pouring water onto does not work, but what happens when you use a ladle or a funnel to direct the water in?

What about not using water (kool-aid)

Or how about holy water? It might be a holy well, and the God is just keeping it from being tainted

All good suggestions. I tried using a huge straw and suck it out without actually touching the water, but that didn't work.

Any object (so far) put into the fountain simply drained it and the fountain stayed drained until it was taken out.

I've tried drinking from it in complete darkness (other than the fountain) but the fountain is lit and the water still goes away, and it's still lit.

The one thing I realized I haven't tried is searching the surface of the fountain. We've searched the whole room, but unless I'm forgetting I haven't looked for a switch or anything on the fountain itself. Duh. I'll see if that might be it.

I'd try closing my eyes. It might be the only way to achieve darkness.

If that didn't work, how about putting both hands into the fountain (so the water drains), then pricking your finger with a dagger?

Oh yeah, another idea... Do you have any way of creating ice or freezing the water? Maybe some kind of frost-brand sword or something...

-Cover it with cloaks, see if it still works in darkness.

- Try saying "darkness" in different languages.

-See if a sealed container, like waterskin, can be lowered into the fountain, then punctured once it's below the barrier that stops water from entering.

-Don't forget to check the base of the pedestal, too. Maybe there's a switch there.

(Frankly, I'm amazed. Our group would be figuring out how to steal something that large made of diamond.)

i know you don't have spells, but if you could get hold of one somehow, maybe you could freeze the water solid and then try and remove the ice.

Drill a hole in the bottom of the fountain.

...basement of a gift shop in an amusement park type place...

Also, if you think about it, this could be a "gag" fountain. "Put this up at a party and watch your (drunk) friends go nuts trying to get a drink! Hours of hilarious entertainment for only 7000gp!"
