I am curious because I always used the argument that "RPG are cheap since you just need a pen and a paper, plus a few dice" to convince new players enter the game... But in this board I have learned that the majority of people rarely miss a book! ;)

I am making this poll for me sheer curiosity alone! Count ONLY your D&D 3rd edition material, not what you bought before 3ed came out, because I want to know if I am an atypical RPG, and I haven't really played before 3ed.

Include the following:

- D&D 3.0 and 3.5 books (rules, adventures, novels) you bought, from WotC or any other publisher

- other d20 books (or even non-d20) only if you have used them to play D&D, but not if you used them for other RP games

- accessories made for RPG (dice, miniatures, maps...)

Don't add other expenses (such transportation costs to go to your friends' house which is very far...). Don't have to mention the single things, just put the total spent in the last 3 years or whatever since you started playing D&D 3ed.

So far I only bought the core 3.0 books, a few supplements and dice, for a total of something less than 200euros (more or less 200$).

I've spent around $850 on 3.0/3.5.

Man, though, if you were to add in all the earlier stuff...were talkin' serious money.

Yeah, I've spent over a thousand dollars, including miniatures. This is a small collection compared to my WW, and previous DnD editions. The thing is, that it does not change how cheap the game really is. Most of my players have never even owned the Players Handbook. They share, or crib notes. Those that do buy a book, usually buy one or two for the entire year.

I use very few of the books I own on a regular basis. I take a few PrCs, a couple of creatures and an idea or two and I am done with it. I simply enjoy reading and collecting them.

I think aside from the core books I really only use the Relics and Rituals books from S&S regularly.

So the game is cheap to play, just expensive to collect.

I agree with Skade ;the great thing about D&D is that you can spend as much or as little as you either wish or can afford and still have a great time. This also stops me scaring myself when I work out I`ve spent around £3-4000 on d20 products & minis. Having said that I`m lucky enough to have a good job, but game with a group including students and others on low income so everyone accesses all the books et al to benefit everyone`s game.

I have spent more than that only counting the PDF files that I have purchased. If I add up what it cost to buy all of the Reaper miniatures that I have, all of the books, the dice, everything, it is probably close to ... on second thought, I really do not want to know.

Well, you've pretty much summed it up--a person could spend as much or as little as s/he is comfortable with.

Apparently most of us on these boards (me included) are comfortable to spend more money on this hobby than some junkies do on their crack habits.

The title of this thread always gets me laughing:
"Draconomicon: Because WOTC knows I still have money left"
