I got a bunch of stuff for free or cheap at various venues -- gamesday got me a few books, a going out of business sale got me at least half a dozen.

Anyway, what I've actually paid doesn't represent what my collection is worth I don't think. I picked the $500-$1000 option, but that's really just a wild guesstimate, and the more I think about it, the more I wonder if I'm not being way too conservative.

I guess I don't want to admit to myself that I've spent over $1000 on d20 books...

more than $3000 on minis
more than $2000 on dice
more than $1500 on 3 modules alone
more than $150 on Original D&D (1974)
more than $1200 on 1edADnD
more than $500 on Basic, Expert, Companion, Masters, Immortals D&D
more than $2000 on 2edADnD
more than $1000 on d20 junk

I've spent less than 200$. We generally divide costs for new manuals among ourselves, and even though I am the one that spends the most, I doubt I've broken 200$ on D&D 3.0/3.5 only.
If you were to count d20 stuff, such as warcraft, ravenloft, star wars... then I think I would easily go over 200$.
If you counted 2e and OD&D stuff as well, it would be more than 500$, probably close to 1000$.

Nevertheless, I am still convinced that the hobby is cheap. I didn't need anything beyond the core manuals. All I've bought, I did because I could afford it - but if I couldn't, I would have gamed all the same.

In all honesty, somewhere around 400 to 500 dollars. I probably OWN more than that, but birthdays are a godsend. :D

Over all time, I've spent probably close to 10,000 dollars on D&D/AD&D/3E, and maybe another 3000 dollars on other RPG's (I'll still never probably play Lost Souls, Tales from the Floating Vagabond, or Twilight 2000 original. :(

But overall, FAR more than is healthy.

Yes, you CAN get by cheaply in this hobby, as some of my players have never owned a PHB! But then, this survey I think will be badly skewed because the fact that we participate in this community means we LOVE D&D, a lot of us are DM's, and we likely own six times as much as any player who is NOT a DM.

(Yes, Diaglo, I know I play with a bunch of slackers.) ;) But of my group, two of the other gamers is just as bad as I am; One is a fellow DM, and the other one just loves collecting game books, and has never bit the bullet to be a GM of any sort.

I am curious because I always used the argument that "RPG are cheap since you just need a pen and a paper, plus a few dice" to convince new players enter the game... But in this board I have learned that the majority of people rarely miss a book!

I think a lot of people on this board can be considered enthusiasts. I also think DMs generally spend more than players. A few of my players have just the core books and between 5 and 10 supplements related to their character (builder books, magic of Faerun, etc.) and interests (Bastion's Faeries, etc.)

Well, I buy a lot of gaming books now, and a rough estimate (by counting the number of gaming books I've got and multiplying by $20) suggests that I'm in the $500-$1000 range (closer to the low end, because some of my books were gifts, and thanks to Amazon many of them were less than $20).

But when I started gaming seriously, I was a straving college student in the last days of 2e, and I owned all of a Player's Handbook and two splatbooks. I didn't start buying lots of gaming books until I had a good job, so I could afford them, and had a regular game again.

:o I saw the poll and voted in the $1000+ catergory but in reality the amount of money I've spent on just 3e+ (not counting 1e or 2e)... well, let's just say I can't count that high. Thank God I work in a bookstore and get an employee discount.
