How much is a "preview" book worth to you?

I'm willing to spend (U.S.$) on a race/class preview book...

How much is it worth to you to acquire a 96-page book that provides some information about 4th edition races/classes just months before the release of the actual PHB?

Not much, I'm afraid. Unless it contains info that the actual release won't have, then it's worthless to me and I'll not purchase it.

If it does, then I'll wait until I see a table of contents or preview and re-evaluate it.

I'll pay no more than 20 bucks for the thing, and that provided that there are articles about development and essays as to why things are they way they are and stuff like that.

I wouldn't buy a preview, because the actual books are going to be previews since I plan to buy into 4E well past its launch, if at all.

If the preview book contains more than pure preview (i.e. it's a nice coffee table book, has some additional "From the Designers"-columns - i.e. a RPG Design 101, or something else, that makes it more than a preview), then about 10 $. If it's only a preview... nothing?

Cheers, LT.

A preview of information that will be posted on this site within minutes of someone getting a hard copy, no thanks.

ENWorld is all the 4E preview news and tidbits I need untile the main book comes out.

Charging for what is basicly an advertisement is not very good marketing.

Now if it was more like a coffee table book with lots of nice new large pictures, design notes, maybe a few stories of around the playtesting tables it might be worth having it for a hard copy of that.

I voted $10-15 which is pretty much what I'll end of paying from Amazon/Gameoutfitter/etc.

It is less than what I paid for previews in Dragon for 3.0 and 3.5 spread over many issues.

And less than I expected to pay for Jan-April previews from DDI (since it looks like paid DDI won't start until May).

Sure the smart/cheap thing to do would be just wait patiently until summer 2008.

And it's at least a magnitude of 10 cheaper than going to DnD XP to get a first look.

But then the smart/cheap thing to do would be to not play at all -- not playing is certainly cheaper than playing.

The preview books are going to be more of a design diary and theory lesson than a real preview. If you like the theory behind revamping a 30 year old game, it should be worth the price of a new Hardcover. $27.95. Its a very niche product however. The 4E nuggets are just to broaden the appeal, but the meat will be in the discussion of where the game is going design wise.
