I really don't like people posting "$0 because I won't play 4e". I would have thought the poll is a measure of 'so, if you're playing 4e, how much cash are you spending?'. But it's getting overblown due to the non-4e players."

I don't agree at all. These boards are for fans of D&D in general. Polls that gauge D&D players' interest level in a particular version of D&D should be open to all D&D players.

As someone who loves D&D but has gotten sick of 3.X and has no interest in 4th edition, I feel it's important to voice one's dissatisfaction with incarnations of the game that don't "do it" for you... as long as you respect others' opinions and aren't trolling.

I voted on both polls and posted comments on both. I fully expect 4E converts to vote on the other poll (and, judging by its results, many are doing so). The polls do not have a caveat stating that you should only vote if you play the particular version of the game; besides, it's perfectly possible for someone to play 4E and Mutants and Masterminds, or play 3.5 and buy 4E setting books for inspiration. I haven't played AD&D in years, and I still buy 1st and 2nd edition books on occassion to harvest for inspiration (I have them all in PDFs purchased from various stores, but I don't derive inspiration from PDFs... only dead-tree variety books. Go figure).

As an example, if 4E hadn't changed FR so thoroughly, I would have bought the campaign setting despite the fact that I have no interest in 4E.

If the OP didn't want to to hear from those of us who are dissatisfied with 4e, they would not have included an option for "$0".

I'll be buying at least five books and one adventure.

Player's Handbook 2
Monster Manual 2
Dungeon Master's Guide 2
Eberron Campaign Guide
Eberron Player's Guide

and the Eberron adventure.

This puts me in the $200-$300

The other books I'll consider if funds are available. I may buy some of the new miniature sets that come out, I'm in dire need of player minis.

That'll put me over though.

1) I didn't say "These boards". I said this thread.

2) See point #1. People have been voicing their dissatisfaction all over the place. The point has been made, and will continue to be made. That doesn't require it to be blasted at every thread where it might apply.

Because people who like 4e but just don't have disposable income and/or have the books they need don't deserve a voice?

Well, I'm the OP. I don't really care for the 4E mechanics. Let me state that the only two reasons I'm buying 4E books are for inspiration for my 3E homebrew, and should I ever get togaether with another group and the general consensus is 4E, I don't want to be left hanging. I may not care for the new edition, but that doesn't mean that I'm not open to playing it.

If a poll were to clearly limit input to players of a particular version of D&D I'd respect that and steer clear of it. I didn't read the OP's post the way you did and figured that a "$0" vote was included to show a lack of interest in 4th edition (just as a "$0" vote on the 3rd edition/OGL poll would show a lack of interest in those materials). After all, the best way to show one's support (or lack thereof) for a given product is with one's wallet.

Am I tired of circular arguments and needless bickering in edition-war threads? Sure. At the same time, I think polls and threads that try to get a snapshot of interest levels for various editions serve a purpose... even if that purpose is to show how fractured the D&D fan-base is.
