How much sleep?

Mercule

This came up last night. I remember, in previous editions, having guidelines for how much sleep a character needed in order to not take penalties and be "tired". I can't find any in 3.5, though. Sure, I know wizards need 8 hours sleep to prepare, and elves are fully rested after 4. But how much sleep does a human fighter need before being fatigued? What's to keep him from staying up all night?

Does anyone have a semi-official answer? (Preferrably with a cite.)

No such rules in 3.x. You've got some penalties for trying to sleep in armor ("Equipment: Armor: Sleeping in Armor"). Also, forced march penalties instead of proper rest ("Adventuring: Movement: Overland Movement: Forced March"). That's about it.

From previous discussions.... there isn't one. If you sleep in med-heavy armor, you are fatigued. If you just stay up all night, there is no penalty. Gofigure.

I would say...(house rule) that you can go with 6hrs a night for a time. Anything less starts requiring fort saves or become fatigued.

I think 6 hours is a reasonable number for prolonged periods, with occasional longer resting periods.
It's probably ok to have no sleep for a single night, or only a few hours, tho.
But more than that is really pushing it. ;)

Bye
