How much support do you want for your favourite campaign setting?

My "wish list" would be for the FR level of detail but with absolutely no advancement of the timeline and NO NOVELS.

I really like FR as a campaign setting, and love the 3E stuff that has been published so far, but I hate, loathe and detest badly written novels and campaign-altering events that aren't scripted by me as DM.

On that note, I'm finding that I am really enjoying Kingdoms of Kalamar although I have yet to start a campaign. There is an excellent level of detail, numerous adventure hooks and possibly the best city supplement ever published in Geanavue (IMO, of course). And, perhaps best of all, no novels!

Now to put together the Kalamar version of the Scourge of the Slavelords, with a liberal sprinkling of G1-3....

Cheers

I'd also like to see contected suppliments. Not connected so much that you need to buy them all before one is useful, but showing that each part of the world is not an island uno itself. All you'd need is chapter at the end showing how to incorperate other material from the other suppliments into this section of the world.

I probably tend towards Blackmoor level support for anything I buy, but hope for all levels of support spread over a variety of settings.

After all, I know I have more time than other people :)

It'd sure be nice if Birthright had a 3E setting to begin with.

But Forgotten Realms level is what I like. Ravenloft is nearly at that level, which is pretty cool, too (3 more books will be coming out over the next couple months).

The Forgotten Realms level (drowning in material)

It's only 4 books a year, man. We're not exactly talking a glut of material.

And Time of Troubles was forced on them, to explain the drastic changes between 1E and 2E. Thankfully, they decided not to do something similar when going to 3E. They just retconned some of the NPC's and left it at that.

I agree, though. No more world-shaking events, please. Or at least do them once a blue moon. It gets old when damn near every setting has SEVERAL world shaking events (Whether it's Forgotten Realms, Ravenloft, or Dragonlance).

4 books a year _now_; it used to be much more. I'm more referring to that glut than today's healthier scheme.

Time of Troubles was not exactly forced upon them. It was a conscious decision to explain the minor changes by a big world-shaking change. AD&D lost monks and assassins. Right. Fairly minor, when you think about it.

Compare to Fate of Istus, the Greyhawk equivalent - much less earth shattering. (Though still badly executed).

However, that doesn't explain the Horde for the Realms; which made them break their promise of "not to detail Sembia". :( It comes from their "let's steal as much from real-earth history" period, where I lost all interest in the Realms.

Anyway, I appreciate different levels of support for different worlds. My favourite world is Greyhawk (a stylistic thing - I like having the evil kingdoms that the Realms lack).

I prefer a high-level of detail, by which I don't mean lots of details - rather I prefer the overview of each area to be pretty detailed; but the actual personas and locations to be left to my own imagining. (Though rulers and similar should be at least partly described).

I also like the old Gygaxian scheme of adventures: a small area detailed for adventuring, with plot ideas that branch out into new adventures. (Have a look at the Forgotten Temple of Tharizdun, the Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth and the Giants/Drow series to see what I mean).

Cheers!

Hmmm....

I like the Greyhawk method.... A few details here and there and leave the rest to my imagination. Besides, I always have www.canonfire.com! I cant believe you didnt plug that site Merric! :D

I too, beleive FR was beaten into the earth... and why does it have to have every type of culture from Earth transposed onto it? Is it to appease the politically correct police???

Greyhawk has always been my fav since the first time in '79... and the only shake up that kind of PO'ed me was the Greyhawk Wars.. but then agian.. it really wasnt TSR then...but a shadow of its former self.

If WOTC does plan to put out more items for GH, I do wish along with Merric ( maybe the gods will here if we combine our wishes) to have overviews of areas in the lands, but not to the detial of the compleate stats of an inkeeper in the town of Pellak.

I'd already plugged it once today in another thread. :)

Oh, very well. Perhaps people might be interested in my article on the GDQ series and some of the inconsistencies therein:

Upon the History of the Giant/Drow Incursion

But back to the main discussion... as a sidelight, what have been your favourite supplements for your favourite setting? Why?

Cheers!

Supplements...

any supplement that provides a history lesson, with details and or dates of history. The "meat" of the supplement doesnt mean that much to me, I will cahnge and tailor what I want to my own specs anyway, but I love reading about the history of a world (GH in my case) I have my own homebrews in which I delve deep into the histories of them, sometimes maybe too much. ( I have one in which I detailed the rulers of a kingdon for a little over 10,000 years)

I like to use the history as a basis for magic items (flavor) and quests... ancient texts.... who knows when history may rear its ugly head...

By the way Merric... Did you recieve that GH timeline I submitted to Canonfire yet?

My favorite setting is Planescape, but what I'm about to say are my opinions for any setting.

...I would want something like a couple big sourcebooks per year, and a module or small sourcebook every two or three months.
Do you want its designers to dictate the course of your campaign with big plotlines that affect the entire setting (e.g. the Time of Troubles for the Realms)?
Yeah! And I'd like them to be very detailed, too. Kinda like the metaplot in the WoD games. That kind of stuff is very easy to ignore if you don't like it, and very useful if you do like it.
Do you want its designers to provide sourcebooks on areas?
That's what one of the "two big sourcebooks per year" is for. The other is for either big NPC organizations (would be factions in PS), or maxiadventures.
Do you want adventures with plothooks?.
If possible. I can live without it, though.
Do you want adventures that affect little around them?
I want small adventures that have relatively little effect and epic maxiadventures too. But I think that a world-shaking adventure should be very long and in deluxe format.
