How much would it be...

...to add a feature to an item, a sword for instance, that granted the weilder a feat? The feat I am looking to add into a weapon is power attack.

I tried to look this up in the DMG, but it seems that there is no rule in there for adding a property to an item that grants the weilder a feat.

On a realted note (and where this is coming from) the DM has given each player a 40,000gp item. It can be anything we want, as long as we stick to the DMG and not draw any info from any of the splat books.

So far I have a +1 Holy Adamantine Undead Bane Bastard Sword. The campaign is undead heavy, so this will be custom tailored to battle undead.

After everything is added up it comes to 35,335gp, which leaves 4665 gp to spend on the item. If possible it would be really nice to be able to add in the power attack feat so that this sword and it's weilder can dish out as much dmaage as possible.

The best I have right now is to add Divine Favor (CL12) 1/day to grant me +5 to atack and damage for 1 minute, which would run 4320gp.

So if the idea of adding a feat to the weapon costs too much, than what other good ideas are out there for maxing out this weapons potential? Any input is much appreciated.

An Ode to Feats
By 20 you'll have 7,
And 7 shall they be
(Unless you are a human)
(Or a Fighter/PrC).

Seriously, though, there's not much in the way of guidelines. The Arms and Equipment Guide gave a rough guide to estimating, but it's 3.0 (and very, shall we say, iffy). The game doesn't handle it too well when the number of feats gained by 20th level increases past the allotted amount, especially when all it requires is gold. ;)

As a DM, I would flat-out veto that. Power Attack opens up an impressive feat chain, and requires people to put at least 13 in strength, which is actually much more onerous than one might think, if one is trying to build anything other than a mere melee powerhouse.

The only existing "feat granting" items I can think of are those that grant proficiency (bracers of archery, which are surprisingly cheap) and those that grant special class abilities, like the ring of evasion (which is not cheap.) Perhaps you might price Power Attack somewhere between those extremes.

It looks like you're suggesting that your DM doesn't mind playing fast and loose with the rules - but at the same time, the DM has forbidden splatbooks. I'm really having a hard time grasping the mindset. Maybe you should just leave it up to your DM to determine price?

IIRC, the Arms and Equipment guide priced a feat at about 10,000gp. But that's not in the DMG, so I think you are out of luck on getting a feat. Out of curiousity, why aren't you just picking up the Power Attack feat with your character?

Here are the items I found in the DMG that give feats (or their approximate) to the wielder/wearer:

Weapons: Keen ability: Improved Critical feat, +1 bonus
Armor/Shield: Arrow Deflection ability: Deflect Arrows feat, +2 bonus
Rods: various Metamagic Rods: Metamagic feats, 3,000-170,000 gp
Wonderous Items: Bracers of Archery: Proficiency in bows, 5,000/25,000 gp
Gloves of Arrow Snaring: Snatch Arrows feat, 4,000gp
Dark Blue Rhomboid Ioun Stone: Alertness feat, 10,000 gp
Scabbard of Keen Edges: Improved Critical feat, 16,000 gp

Maybe someone could come up with a formula using the above as guidelines, but as far as I can tell, there is no pattern.

Thanks for the help everyone.

To answer your questions;
- The DM isn't "loose and fast" with the rules. He does stick 99% to the core rulebooks. He does allow things from the Miniatures handbook IF a player present's it for DM approval prior to any game use. Since we play in Eberron he may allow other Eberron related material as well, but we have not run into that situation yet.
- The cjaracter in question is a 12th level fighter/ 1st level cleric. His next level is 14th (13th fighter). So as you can see he won't be getting any more feats for 2 more levels. Sure, he can take it then, but that is 2 levels away.

Since the game is tonight I think thathte best choice for this weapon, with the GP I have left to spend is to go with the 1/day divine favor.

Again, Thanks for the help.

For pricing Feats also look at metamagic rods, keen weapons, mighty cleaving weapons, ring of evasion...

I've called the cost of feats to be 25k. And if you want, say, cleave, you'll need 50k (25 also for power attack).
