How necessary is Gargantuan/Colossal sizing?

First Post
In 20XX, when WotC releases 4th Edition, only Red and Gold Dragons get to sizes larger than Huge - all other former Gargantuan and Colossal monsters get their size reduced to Huge.

How would you react to this?

Why? I would act in confusion as I see no reason why there can't be more big creatures. It isn't like it's complex to use them or anything. Some dinosaurs are just that big as well with other made up creatures. A Tarrasque that is just Huge is not as cool. :D

And then the reason would occur to you -- it's cheaper to make Huge miniatures than it is to make Gargantuan/Colossals! How would you react then?

I don't use minis so I wouldn't accept that as a good reason and burn all my D&D books and go play Scion. :D

It's cheaper to make Huge miniatures than it is to make an Aston Martin, yet the company still turns a profit.

I dislike the size/facing changes between 3.0 and 3.5, but the existance of fantastically large creatures doesn't itself bother me. There are a few creatures that just need to be beyond huge.

I don't purchase minatures, and would be completely happy using a paper cut out (if I felt the need for anything) to represent a gargantuan creature.

Sure, sure. Picture the thought process of the WotC Design Team like this:

1. Monsters come in sizes from Tiny to Colossal
2. Gargantuan and Colossal miniatures are too bulky to package with regular DDM sets
3. Only incredibly popular monsters like dragons will be purchased in a $30-40 standlone manner
4. We want to (theoretically) be able to make miniatures of anything in a Monster Manual
5. Therefore, only dragons(and *maybe* a Tarrasque) will be allowed to be bigger than Huge; everything else must be Huge or smaller.

Actually, I would expect WotC to make a much larger profit margin on the larger minis. The cost of material of miniatures is bound to be marginal. A majority of the cost is in marketing, packaging, shipping, etc. Then remember that WotC gets to charge a whole lot more for the larger minis.

WoTC is owned by Hasbro ergo Collossal Mini = Action Figure

Tarrasque-zilla the new toy craze sweeping the market

I don't imagine that is their thought process, though.

If, as you postulate, Colossal miniatures really are impossible to sell, then I'm on their side. What else could they do? You can't ask them to sell things at a loss; i don't expect them to pay for the privilage of my playing D&D on a Thursday night.

If, on the other hand, there is a price point at which such miniatures can turn a profit (and I suspect there is), then I'd want WotC to do that.

If, as I think you're saying, they base MM stat blocks solely on the viability of an accompanying miniature, then yes, I'd have a big problem with that. I also imagine we'd have a very thin Monster Manual! :D
