Hmm, over 31 sessions, but not much beyond that. We typically run a campaign every week for about a year, and end somewhere in the level 10 to 13 range. Which after subtracting holidays and various times when people can't make it, ends up being somewhere in the 30-40 session range.

I can't really vote on this. I don't really count the # of sessions. From my XP my games tend to peter out around 10-12th level (weekly to biweekly gaming). It's usually due to DM/player/Genre burnout that we quit. I'm running the Age of Worms right now and we just finished the second adventure (6 sessions so far). I am hoping that this lasts to 20. Before we started playing the group got together and discussed that we have never gone to 20. We talked about how this was the time. By running a pre-made adventrue it cuts down on a lot of the prep time, and thus makes it a lot less likely I'll burn out.

Fingers crossed

That said, for me a year to a year and a half campaign is good time frame. There are too many neat settings that I want to explore and play in. It's like a TV show, if one storyline kept running year after year I would get bored with it. Successful TV shows are generally ones that have a new storyline creep in after the old one finishes, or has lots of side breaks from the main story to keep it interesting.

I used to watch the X-files and was a huge fan. I got sick of waiting and waiting to find out what the hell happened to Mulder's sister. I don't think I know to this day what happened to his. I had stopped watching by then.

The longest campaign I was part of lasted a little over 2 years (probably about 100 sessions). The average legnth is closer to around 5 months, making that around 20 sessions.

I voted over 30, but really have no idea what the actual average is. I've played or GMed quite a number of games that went for well over a year, but don't remember the short ones very well. (If at all.) Some lasted only a few weeks, most several months.

My current group will play its 50th session of the campaign this week. (Hmm...golden anniversary, eh? Should I get everybody a gift?)

Barring catastrophic events (DM or too many players quitting/moving away, etc.), few campaigns I've been involved in have "reset" before 31 sessions. And it would annoy me to no end if they did so frequently.

Campaign Reset: Specifics

I usually "reset" the campaign in 10-15 sessions. However, to be precise:

  • We game twice a month.
  • We play marathon sessions that last 8-10 hours.
  • I've only run three actual campaigns.
  • I'm a fairly lethal DM.

My C&C campaign (8 months old) is having its 32nd session today. My longest campaign was 2E with over 80 session, 10 to 14 hours (sometimes even longer!) each session. My sessions tend to last at least 8 hours.

I voted less than 10. I have bad luck with the people who claim to want to play in my campaigns. They move away, dont keep gaming commitments, or just have bad luck themselves in their ability to game. The ones I get to keep are usually fall into 2 catagories. They are either the "sit & watchers", or the "hack & slashers". I think I had a realatively unique experience on my New Year's Eve game, a one shot, of having TOO many players. I had 12 players. A first time experience of having too many, instead of the usual not enough.

My longest running D&D campaign is 12 years, and close to 1000 sessions. Started in 2E, converted to 3E, with characters around 12-13th level now. No end in sight yet.

I've had a Deadlands campaign for 5 years, and probably 70 sessions.

Been running a WHFRP2 campaign for about the last 1.5 years, and going on 40 sessions now.

So no, I don't do short campaigns.
