The link to the marketing research article in the first post no longer works. The old Enworld post that it links to is there, but the link in that post goes to a missing page. Is the article online anywhere else, or does anyone have a copy?

I've never been in a 3.5 D&D campaign longer than 10 sessions. Had a 3e campaign that lasted for 30+ sessions. And I've had a 2e Campaign that lasted 6yrs.

I rapidly get tired of storylines that don't come to some kind of a conclusion after 10-20 sessions; but I love character continuity.

So what I do is run something like mini-campaigns with periodic "resets" every ~6 levels. The group starts in one region of the world dealing with one set of problems, then when that's wrapped up they move on to the next "chapter" -- the characters are all set to the same ECL and their loot is culled (generally allowing players to keep or upgrade their 2-3 favorite goodies and assuming the rest is spent/donated/invested in land/used up or lost), and they are in a new region of the world dealing with some other set of problems. Anybody who is tired of their character can use the transition as an opportunity to retire them and begin a new one.

So, by the time the campaign is creaking under its own weight, we're essentially starting a "new" campaign, just with the same PCs. That helps me keep that "new campaign" energy and enthusiasm.

Me and my crew last about 20 sessions or so before we get the itch to switch things up. Have had campains that last longer and shorter but would say 20 is a good average. On the other hand my older brother who is 37 has run a game with 4 of his friends one who became his wife 8 years ago, since they were in highschool (thats 20+ years). Two of them live in other parts of the state now so for the past few years its been a once a month thing, they fly(live in Texas) or drive in to play. Now I envy him sometimes for having such rich history built up with this group and campain but I like what me and my freinds do too.

Note: He still uses 1E and a ton of house rules, like open ended percintile rolls for most everything. And he keeps the character sheets that have all the numbers on them, don't know if any of them even know what their ability scores are anymore. I could never do this.

1981 to the present, no resets

There have been some diversions (RECON, Boot Hill, Oriental Adventures) and many parties, but my D&D world is still the same world (modified Greyhawk) with the same characters, just retired from PC to NPC.

The History Of Gaming..according To Me...

Recalling back... I was 9 years old when I first played (3rd grade). All new campaigns generally started in the autumn:

1981 - D&D Known world; Primitive gaming as player (D&D red boxed set - female wizard on front)
1982 - D&D Known world; Primitive gaming as player (D&D blue expert boxed set - male wizard on front)
1983 - Parents bought me the 1981 red & blue boxed sets. Irregular gaming Dm only
1984 - D&D Known world ; Grandparents bought me the 5 Advanced D&D books (newer covers). My grades started to suffer..I put the books away for 8 months. I remember pulling them out and them smelling like antiques.
1985 - Home world -first try at REAL campaigning based on "Where the Evil Dwells" by Clifford D. Simack and some Conan books I'd read - DM only
1986 - Home world - restart
1987 - Home world - restart
1988 - Home world - restart/redesign with help of the Forgotten Realms boxed set as the new standard for campaign content.
1989 - Started running a concurrent PBM wargame AND Hyborian War from RSI (see interest in Conan later).
1990 (autumn) - UNDERGRAD: Classic Scenarios Campaign" - DM; Ran my first RPGA scenario
1991 - Started new "Greyhawk campaign" as DM
1992 - Started "Forgotten Realms" as a player
1993 - Restarted in Greyhawk with "From the Ashes" campaign. Wild Coast
1994 - Greyhawk - Wild Coast/Bright Desert
1995 - Greyhawk - Player; Keoland
1996 - Greyhawk - Furyondy/Vesve
1997 - Greyhawk - Iuz, Irongate
1998 - Greyhawk - North Province/Bone March
1999 - Greyhawk - North Province; Also as a player in one other campaign;
2000 - Classic modules campaigns; Player in one other campaign; Triad for Living Greyhawk;
2001 - Hyboria - New - Brythunia
2002 - Hyboria - Brythunia/Turan
2003 - Hyboria - Brythunia/Zamora
2004+ Hyboria -

It was hard to recall back to all those campaigns. How about you folks?
