I first played at age 20.

Most of our long-time crew started in their late teens, and until seeing this poll I thought that was the norm. I'm very surprised.

I'm right in the sweet spot - 12 years old. We were bored at scout camp, and somebody ran "D&D" - only, with cards for random numbers, no books, and it was like the Wacky Races edition. IIRC, I played a dwarf mage (which as we all know, is impossible) (we all know that, right? ;) ), and we were using magic dynamite against the tribes of orcs that were warring with the other tribes of orcs (who we had enslaved), and all of this took place INSIDE our bag of holding. Oh, and I had in it my head that a magic missile was, like, a Stinger.

Bought the 2e PHB a month or two later, and started roping my one friend, other neighborhood kids, and my mom into games. 17 (ugh - 17?!?) years later, here we are. :)

Well... back when I was like 10 or 11 was when the RPG seed was planted in my head. Me and my friends called it "Quest". We'd play Quest on the bus ride home, at lunch, and sometimes after school at someones house. There were no dice or rules involved. Just kids with their imagination. Sometimes a hand drawn menu of the local Weapon Store was involved with broadswords and shields colored in with colorpencil...

When I started playing D&D and 'real' RPGs with dice was between first and second year of college so I was about 19-20.

...I kind of miss Quest.

So much for the idea that it's 4e that's for the 13 year old WOW player.

That describes earlier editions pretty well too. :)

For the record, 8 years old. My brother's friend and I made a couple of magic users and promptly got eaten by stirges in the Caves of Chaos. :)

1977. 15 years old. Started with the OD&D white box. I first heard of RPGs in 1976 but my same-age friends had no interest. In 1977 I joined a Science Fiction club at a nearby university and made some new friends who turned me on to D&D. For the life of me I cannot remember the RPG I considered in '76 but I think it was an ad in ANALOG magazine [the Ben Bova years] that got my attention.

I discovered D&D in late 1977- I was 10, almost 11. A few months later in 1978, I found Traveller.

RPG junkie ever since!

My dad played every other Saturday with his group at our house. I remember reading through the 1E Monster Manual and Fiend Folio for maybe a year or so before he began teaching me and my sister when I was in junior high, maybe 11-12 years old, maybe around 1992 or so. My sister is 2 years younger than I, so she was about 9-10. Then I was in college when 3e came out, and they had big promotional tents and stuff, so I got in on the ground floor of 3e my sophomore year in college. I've been gaming for... holy smokes, 16 or so years by now.
