If people ask I have no problem telling them I game, but I don't usually talk about gaming unless I am with other gamers. I been in situations where I have been looked down upon after people found out I game, so I don't go around advertising it.

Quick question, one you need not answer publicly,

WHY would you want to be witha woman who would judge you for being yourself?

If gaming is part of what you do, do you really think it would be fun to keep it hidden from your girlfriend? Do you want to be with someone who is so judgemental that you can't tell her about your hobbies?

This is just one of those situations I always hear about that seriously I can not wrap my mind around. :\

Never mind. I just re-read your post and saw that you were about 11 when this happened...but I was not specifically addressing you ;) It was just a general thought.

I see I was unclear.

First of all, every girlfriend I've ever had has either already been interested in gaming when I met her, or gotten into gaming through me. I wouldn't dream of hiding it, and it's typically an activity we end up doing together. (I've actually gamed with most of them, though in one case only after we broke up. One only got as far as making a character before we split, and another turned out to dislike my preferred style, and vice versa, so she didn't stay in my game for long.)

Second, the above incident did not happen when I was eleven, it happened last year. "The only time X has happened *SINCE* I was eleven" does not mean "I was eleven when X happened" - if anything, it implies that I wasn't.

Third, as I believe I said, I was only embarassed because the guy went on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on about his old, munchkin characters even though both the people he was talking to were trying to make it clear that we would like him please to stop - and I was guilty by association, or that was how I was made to feel anyway, because he did so in response to a comment from me. Before that, we had her interested and asking questions.

I don't know where people got the idea I was one of the people who hide their gaming. No offence or anything, but did you people even read the last paragraph of my post?

Edit - corrected one typo.

I put mine on something other, because:
It's in my résumé. Some employers ask about it, and others don't. Generally speaking they find it interesting, and something special that sets me apart from the grey mass of applicants.

That's what I've just done. Not sure how it's going to go down, havn't had any new interviews yet... figured I might as well be up front about it? It is one of my major hobbies after all...

Neither hide it or proselytize it. My family, friends, and the people I work with know that I game and am into sci-fi, cartoons, and fantasy, just as they know I'm into gardening, painting, and movies. They take it as who I am and what I do, just like I know a lot of them are into things I don't particularly care for like hunting, NASCAR, and clubbing. We all get along fine, probably because we all have many interests and because none of us sit around droning on and on about our hobbies. A boring geek is a boring geek, whether they're babbling on to someone who's not interested about their new miniatures or the NASCAR point standings.

No one said you were one of the people who hid gaming. As you can see in the last paragraph I wrote to you, I was merely using this as a general example.

There are A LOT of people (men and women) I have heard of who go out of their way to hide gaming from the person they are dating. I was just saying I think that is silly.

That sounds like it could be quite 'dangerous' to me, if it was in a long term relationship...

At the very least, sneaking around behind a partners back to do something is going to start an argument or two. Shows a lack of trust, etc.

Yup. I think if you can't be honest with someone about what you like to do, that's just a bad way to begin a relationship.

And if that person is going to mock you for what you like to do, they're probably not a very nice person...
