How popular is the DDM game, anyway?

You know, I used to think that no one actually played or cared much about the DDM game, but instead did what I do--buy the booster packs for the minis and chuck the cards. :heh:

But over at boardgamegeek, there's quite a lot of info about DDM as a hobby in its own right, and apparently there's tournaments and whatnot. Shows you how much I know. :o

So, tell me . . . how popular IS DDM as its own entity, as opposed to a feeder for tabletop RPGs?

For the most part, we buy the figures for DnD but we always want to play the skirmish game. I still want to in fact.

Some areas there is a strong following for the skirmish game. Gets to the whole Role vs Roll idea (I know....bad play on words).

Some like the war aspect and others are more into what motivates one to adventure.

It's very strategic in nature, which makes it appealing to RTS type game players. It was enjoyable for a while. I stopped playing it when the rulebook passed 32 pages. Hopefully the next version will have a much simpler rule system to it.

I do know a number of folks who only play DDM, mainly because they don't have time for a D&D game or don't have more than one other to play with.

DDM is so popular that 5E will be a miniatures game! All the rules will come in random cards, and you'll have to collect them all to get all the classes, monsters, spells and feats! WotC is totally devoted to DDM and not roleplaying now!

The joke used to be with 4th edition, but now WotC has come and spoiled all our fun! :p

The skirmish game is pretty darn popular. I don't play it, but I collect them for my rpg game. They are going to be changing the rules in a 2.0 version of DDM in a few months.

Check out www.maxminis.com if you're interested in collecting or skirmish playing.

I also sell minis in singles. If you're interested, check out my inventory from the link in my sig.

It's a fun game. Actually, it's a fun couple of games. Game #1 is building warbands, game #2 is colliding with other warbands. I'd play it more if I had more people that wanted to play with me...
