How Prevalent Are Prestige Classes in Your Game?

Like RigaMortis, all of the players LOOOVE the concept of the Prestige Class, but we have neverf gotten our campaigns to last long enough to actually get them.

The one opportunity, level-wise, that I've had for a character to get a PrC and the DM declares 'only core books, keep it simple'. So, until I manage to get my game back up and running, and/or get my own characters up past 5th (the 'default minimum' level to get a PrC it seems) I'm going to say none, never ;)

On the other hand I can safely say that, given my choice (and enough levels) I'll almost alway take a PrC over a 'straight' class.

Out of five players, one currently has a prestige class, two are going for one, and two are more or less ambivalent about the classes they've been offered.

As a general rule, there are a lot of PrC in the game. I worked out that I introduce the possibilty of a new class about once every two to three game sessions, although the majority of them are related to NPC organisations the PC's have no interest in joining.

That beings aid, there are about eleven that have been offered to the PC's as possibilities, with two more showing up next week some time.

In our current game 2 players out of five have taken PrC (Fighter/Battlerager & Druid/Elder Druid)

I am personally big fan of PrC and most of my characters ideas aim to some, but because of our slow gaming pace (current campaing has been running for 3 years real time, characters are no 8 - 10th level) I don't often get opportunity to fullfill them.

none...

Never played into the power-levels you need for a prestige class, but then no one DMing i know is allowing any of them anyways, so i never saw even one :(

Well, I will have to DM myself to see what they are good for.

i dont like most prestige classes one bit, because they are too powerful or too weak... alot of the ones in Star Wars are weak.

some of my favs are Eunuch warlock (OA), Arcane Trickster (TB), Pale Master (TB), Theif Acrobat (SS), Drunken Master (SF), all of the ones from Rokugan. Knight of the Chord (EM 2). i dont like most Unofficial Prestige classes.

In our current campaign all the longer term characters have or are taking prestige classes. The campaigns been running 8 months and the characters have achieved levels where they can finally take them.

I generally feel that prestige classes add alot to the game in a roleplaying sense but can seem unbalanced at times. To go back to (and slightly alter) a phrase often used for feats when 3E first came out, "if everyone wants to choose prestige classes over standard classes, then prestige classes (ability wise) are too good!".

One example of the above are some of the classes from Tome & Blood granting loads of abilities and continuing spell progression. It's like, ok, play the basic wizard as written, or play the whatever with all the things the basic wizard gets except a metamagic/creation feat every 5 levels, and gain a nice class ability every level. Given that which would you choose?

In our current "actual" campaign (as opposed to our playtesting), we have three prestige classes out of five characters.

monk / Tattood Monk (from OA)
psion / rogue / Mind Thief (from Librum Equitis 2)
and a cleric / rogue / Practical One (from Librum Equitis 1)

Out of 51 total levels, we have no prestige classes. One character might pick up a PrC soon, though; fighter doesn't really get much better after 12th level. :( Another character wants to take levels in fatespinner, but won't qualify for a few levels.

To be honest, not very. PrC's get much more use from the DM than the players. But then, there are more NPCs than PCs.

In the current game, there is only one PC with a prestige class: a Ranger/Ghostwalker. However, I've sold the party monk's player on picking up "perfected one" once the party reaches epic levels.

Recent NPCs have included:
Many drow True Necromancers, Pale Masters, and Templars. Coming soon: Drow elf bone archers!

A sorceress/mirror master (helpful NPC)

A female conjurer/summoner (main villain in campaign)

An aristocrat/fighter/blackguard (major villain, recently slain, but will probably be back as a death knight. :) )

A bloodless wizard/archmage (which convinced me that archmages are too powerful)

A cleric/summoner servant of the resident tyrant god.

Various cleric/warpriest servants of the resident tyrant god.
The king's fighter/rogue/devoted defender.

A turncoat villain Wizard/Spectral Loremaster
