Here's a thought.

Why bother? Just make sure his phylactery is somewhere the PCs aren't likely to find. Then let them disintegrate him as often as they like. He'll just be back next month.

Well, if that's a concern, there's always contingency. I've rarely run a lich (or any evil arcane spellcaster, unless it was truly inappropriate) who didn't have one of those babies up and running.

Just say it didn't effect him. Roll some dice and look happy with the result.

I'd actually prefer to let them have it. This would encourage them to use disintegrate more in the future, giving them the false impression that it's a reliable spell. Then, when the lich returns for his revenge, or the next BBEG steps up to bat, it will fail them at a crucial moment and the entire party will be spanked horribly.

The lich could just have ensured that his phylactery is well or locked up somewere and return in 1d10 days after the disintegration.
